If you want to prove that statement you would have to prove that the same (or equivalent) advances couldn't have been made by spending the money on other research.

The only people who are opposed to manned space flight are those who are ignorant about it.
I am opposed to it, and I think I probably know quite a bit more about research than you do. I also know a lot of people (even people within NASA) who would agree with me.

Why is this an either or proposition? Why do you keep harping on a piddly amount of money that wouldn't change anything while ignoring the massive amount of waste and fraud that goes on in the military budget, and hell, capitalism in general. Why do you keep ignoring all of the good that has come out of manned space exploration?

Why, cuase you don't really care, that's why. You're opposed, and no amount of evidence will convince you otherwise because like all neanderthals, your brain isn't well organized and is slow to adapt to reality. That's why you will go extinct while we cro-mangons will take over the world!

world hunger cannot be easily ended.

This would involve forcibly moving U.S. troops to African nations to distribute food. They may not like this. The U.N. would not like us moving U.S. troops into other nations.

You just want to get money for all the boring stuffCERN does.

(the above is meant to be a joke, I recognize the importance of whatever you CERN weenies(to use GP's words) do there)

We also wouldn't have the Microwave and that cool coated pans
and without those I'd have died a long Time ago...
and thats how Spaceflight saved my Life.

We need to continue orbital work. If nothing else then for national security. Soon China will be in space. And we must continue space work so we are more familiar with the technology to get to space. Time may come when other nations threaten our satellits with their satellites. Developing technology to efficienty get into orbit is always a priority.

What gives America the right to make space our exclusive domain?

Space exploration for humankind or American military intrest?

Oh, certainly it could have been done without manned space flight, it just wouldn't have been done without it. We could probably do lots of things without manned space flight, but we won't. If manned space flight goes, so will all the research that goes with it. The money won't be reappropriated towards your lab, it'll either go to paying off the debt or a tax break.

You see, your choice isn't manned space flight versus more reseach, it's manned space flight versus tax cut. Frankly, you need to quit focusing on the speck called NASA and pay more attention to the black hole called the Department of Defense.

                    • WTF???

I can barely believe you just asked what the "history lesson" had to do with NASA (cost-effective or not...which, btw, was not your orignal point...you said NASA is a waste of funds, period....actually, "exclamation point" - I ain't makin' it up....it's your title, after all)

So....if you genuinely don't know the answer to that question, here goes:

#1) Science is a good thing. Science makes it possible for people to live longer, fuller, more productive lives. It makes it possible to create plants (food for starving children, for example) that can grow anywhere humans live--middle of a freakin' sand trap, on top of a snow-capped mountain, you name it). Science pushes back the darkness, and illuminates our world with understanding.

#2) Exploration is a good thing. If not for exploration, then the whole of the world's population would be living either in Africa, or in Asia, depending on who you read. But human beings have this in-born need to explore....to find out what's over the next hill....and that has served us very well. It has brought about discoveries that we would not have made had we "stayed home."

#3) You have to walk before you run. Exploration and science is well and good, but you cannot expect a six-year-old in his sandbox to make the next generation's space vehicles....so you start small. You start with unmanned rockets....get that right, move up the ladder to bigger and better rockets, multi-staged rockets that deliver unmanned probes as payload, and so forth, until at last, your understanding is good enough to put real, living breathing humans in space. And then, you practice. You practice, because it ain't easy putting real, living breathing humans into space. Very dangerous.

So was sailing across the atlantic, but using history as a guide, even if we don't know precisely what the payoff is, it's out there. We need only the courage to grasp it.

I do not mean to insult you in any way, but this stuff ain't exactly "rocket science," you know?

All you've said is that it's not worth it. You've ignored evidence to the contrary, you've ignored historical paralels, and you've ignored actual waste.

                          • The NASA budget has been slashed for years. Exactly what percentage of these savings have gone to help the poor and hungry of the world?

                            • I agree that NASA is a waste of money. Yes, a lot of neat science has come from the space program, but it's practical research, as opposed to blue skies research. That means there's plenty of motivation from the private sector to figure this stuff out. The space program pretty much amounts to corporate welfare.

That Adventure resulted in a Power which now harass the Explorers (europeans).
