This is wierd. Maybe it has to do with environment, but I know a large bunch of girls with whom not only can I connect, but whom I also like to talk to, even though most of them are suspiciously lefty (as in, commie or anarchist, or just lefty)

Yeah, I need a woman with a brain...this is the problem with going out into Hull...as well as it being crap, you are likely to get someone with the intellect of a picked beetroot. Not going to keep me interested, and I would feel like I have to lower myself...so no, I expect a bit of reciprocation too.
