AFAIK, its a very delicate matter of plopping them in boiling water and waiting for them to float. I think salt may be added to the water if prefered. But honestly, I think I've personally boiled eggs maybe twice in my life.

Do you want soft boiled (runny yolks), hard boiled or poached?

For the first two, put the eggs in cold water (if you put them in hot water they will crack open) and heat until boiling. Let boil five minutes. Turn the heat down to simmering and heat soft-boiled eggs for an additional 4 - 6 minutes, crack with spoon and scoop. For hard-boiled, simmer for fifteen minutes, put into cold water and let sit until cool to touch, peel, and eat.

For poached eggs, crack eggs into a bowl and slide eggs into SIMMERING water for 3 - 5 minutes (depending on how done you want the yolks), and remove from water.

If you want it to be runny, warm the water untill it boils, and lay the egg(s) into the water for about 5 minutes. The water have to boil all the time.

If you want it to be hard, do the same, but keep the egg(s) into the boiling water for about 10 minutes.

Why? Honestly, it has been informative. I've never boiled an egg before, either. I likely would have just plopped it in boiling water, which as che taught me would have cracked. Now I know better!

Given that my wife didn't know how to cook a grilled-cheese sandwich until her 30s, I shouldn't be surprised that people don't know how to boil eggs.

                  But, still... wow.

Cooking ignorance runs rampant. Many people are afraid of anythign other than a microwave.

Che's post was very helpful and informative.

But grilled cheese sandwiches are hard, they take like 4 or 5 steps. Boiled eggs need 2:
                      1/ Put egg in water.
                      2/ Boil

BTW, those times che gave you vary greatly with the altitude that you're at. In places like Denver, you have to boil things about twice as long than at sea level.

I also though in, say, a teaspoon of salt...just to raise the boiling point.

And you thought is was easy to boil an egg.
