Jaakko, and as for your question about Combat Academy, I haven't ever been there and don't have first hand experience, but I think it should be decent..
I think they have some kind of introductions to different styles where you can go for free and check it out.

And more to the TKD thing. I have a friend who has been doing it for ages, and is pretty good, competing and all.
He's very good kicker, far more superior than me. Actually the only kick I can really give good is the low leg kick, but that suits my style. I don't need other kicks, maybe front kick every now and then. But this guy just kicks like crazy. He can't do grappling really, so when we sometimes get it going for fun, he always complains that I won't fight for real since I shoot and take him down the first chance I get.. but hey, that's real fighting! There are no 'we must stand up' rules. He now knows some grappling, so it's not that easy anymore . But on the other hand, I can stand up some more, with punching. I'm not in the same planet in kicking with him, but the point is, his kicks aren't that useful. It's like lucky sucker punch. You can get it sometimes, but.. it's more likely you won't.

Though I've been getting some punishment from him, since he has learned to dump the high kicks and sidekicks, and goes with those low kicks, and I tell you he can really give them good. So I'd say his TKD backround has given him a big arsenal of kicks, but now he uses only maybe 2 different kicks when we roll, so..
TKD is usefull, but if you want reality stuff, then you should add few styles to your arsenal as well, or you won't stand a chance.

People who are usually good at fighting usually dont talk too much about it. Even if you enjoy it... I duno i can just sense something out of the way they talk. It is internet and its not like anything can be really proven anyway....

I cant research how to fight. Ugh I dont even know what I am syaing now. I just give up.

What kind of championship is this?

Drake, and yes, wrestling is good and if you know how to really do boxing.. good combination. Wrestlers have been doing good.. there are many more fighters, many of them have wrestlign backround, many.

Wrestlers who don't know submissions, though, are generally screwed.

Only problem I have with utlimate/cage fighting is they don't allow most of the hits I'll be shooting for. The same karateka who used to be up skinheads grew up and finally stopped being hateful to himself and others. Now he does the ultimate fighting thing and is learning how to get good. But they don't allow the immediate takedown hits like full-on face punches, throat and temple strikes, knee hits, etc. I have been hit in the throat and taken out at the knee and the fight was over. So that's my intent should it ever happen. Fortunately I seem to live the same blessedly uneventful life most people live. BTW, I have and am being taught to fight from the ground, but when the fight is over it helps to get up to leave

I agree - UFC isn't full NHB because of the danger element involved. But UFC/Pride are the closest things out there besides street fights.

Yep. Sometimes guys who haven't followed the sport disagree 'why don't he' this and that and 'that wouldn't work, oh that's stupid', but they don't always realise that these guys are good and that's the way it goes when both fighters are experienced. And they make mistakes too.

It's funny, UFC allows strikes with elbows (or just forearms?) to the head on the ground, when Pride allows kicks on the head on the ground and knees too, soccer kicks etc. They should combine their rules already! But with current rules, I like Pride just little bit more.
Since you can start striking to the head when in the ground in pride too, but in UFC if fighters are in sidemount, or maybe in 69, first thing that comes to mind is 'knee knee!' and it's a shame UFC is not allowing that move, because it's not that realistic if you have to continue looking for submission, or maybe better position to strike than just kneeing. Also if a guy is down, it's kind of stupid when the opponent has to jump in straight to ground game, or punch when you could just give a nice soccer kick.. well just my thoughts.

It's also a little bit shame that they don't allow headbuts... It's not so dangerous it should be banned, and it's a great weapon, especially on the ground.

Remember what Vanderlai Silva did to Sakuraba in that position? THAT'S what I'm talking about!

In any case, early UFC rules were much better. Too bad the early strikers sucked, for the most part.

Boxing or wrestling. Both are less high impact than karate sparring or judo falling. Both are great workouts. There's more of a sports infrastructure to use them/compete in them. You won't be such a badass as if you take something that is more of a deadly martial art. But you can go more all out in sparring/competition.

I agree with GP, boxing and wrestling are great workout, and it's tough too.

Though, we do pretty much all out sparring too. Actually our sessions are first warm up (which is more than jumping a rope, it kills you already), then some technique, maybe two different techniques and do them over and over and over and over again with partner, since there's only one way to learn good, and that's just doing them over and over again.. and then sparring. About 30 minutes sparring 4 x 5 minutes, and 10 minute break overall. It's very tough, since guys are trying hard and it's a bit punishment sometimes, but strikes are not as hard as possible. But it's very tough, I've never got my ass kicked so hard everywhere as I do every week in the gym

Yeah. But a good wrestler can pick up judo pretty quick. And they are generally pretty tough and strong. The cool thing about wrestling practice (even compared to boxing) is the large amount of time, you spend going after it. Probably more feasible in a sport that does less damage.
