  • But Sulaymaniyah, a city in northern Iraq with approximately 500,000 inhabitants, tells a different story. Indeed, across a crescent-shaped slice of northern Iraq, the picture is the same: The shops are stocked, and the people are eating. Northern Iraq lives under exactly the same international sanctions as the rest of the country. The difference here is that local Kurdish authorities, in conjunction with the United Nations, spend the money they get from the sale of oil. Everywhere else in Iraq, Saddam does. And when local authorities are determined to get food and medicine to their people--instead of, say, reselling these supplies to finance military spending and palace construction--the current sanctions regime works just fine. Or, to put it more bluntly, the United Nations isn't starving Saddam's people. Saddam is.
You don't think this might have something to do with the nearly 5 billion dollars worth of medical equipment the Iraqis have tried to purchase and have been refused?

No.. it doesn't. My biased news services are as good as yours But unlike you, I read more neutral sources as well...
These 'neutral sources' being what, and telling you what? The guy who wrote this went to Iraq to report on the situation for the UN. Do you think he's lying?

    Comment

    • No... he's not "lying"... just telling it the way he wants to see it. Just like most people are doing

      • Why would he want to see it this way? Do you think he enjoys the belief that the US is responsible for the deaths of millions of people?

        • He seems to revel in blaming the US... and adds prose to it to make it sound even better. It is a very one sided point of view. I have no problem with people doing that... I just look at both sides and make my own conclusions instead of having it spoon fed to me

          • Ramsey Clark!

Ramsey Clark leads and anti-US group, IIRC. He actually asked the Hague to indict Clinton for Kosovo. This made Clinton do an about-face on the new ICC, which, until Ramsey, he supported.

Ramsey Clark is EXTREMELY biased and unreliable.

Are you referring to the 'International Action Centre' ?

Pity. OTOH, did you ever consider that his charges might have substance?

Ramsey Clark is EXTREMELY biased and unreliable.
Why do you consider him so biased?

              • Just read what he writes. His biases come screaming off the page. If you want "objective", he isn't it. He has an ax to grind, so he grinds it. His POV... but not a very objective one.

If what Ned has said is true, then he is obviously biased, being anti-american and all

One can dislike America without being biased.

                    • That is true... but he has shown his anti-american fangs far too many times. He has also NEVER agreed with America, even when they have been proved right. So it's really hard taking him seriously. He has an agenda, and it's that simple. He is biased and not objective. And that's a fact. But if you want to continue to be spoon fed his propaganda, feel free. That's your right.
                      I choose differently
