Again, thanks for the new suggestions... looks like I've got my work cut out...

I think I'll have to finally give Led Zeppelin a try then.
Damn right. Start with Babe I'm Gonna Leave You from Led Zep 1, and you'll never look back.
I never liked Zep that much, but this song suddenly launched them into the sphere of great music for me. Funny how one song can suddenly change your opinion of an artist, and you then see all their other songs in a different light. Thinking about it this has happened to me on many occasions.

I liked Led Zep since I can remember.
I'd recommend Led Zep II as starting album. Babe I'm gonna leave you is also a great song.

Wait a second! You want something that rocks "like Led Zep"? Er, Is this the Led Zep I know, with the interminable and excessively boring finely-plucked muzak, interspreced with some okay riffs ruined by the singer with the most weedy woice in pop music?

            That's the one.
Hey I didn't like Zep for ages, listen to Babe I'm Gonna Leave you and change your opinion. Man I've typed that one song title a lot in this thread.

Er, well. "Rock" apparently means a different thing to me and to everyone else. I mean, I don't mid a good old Henrixy lickout like, say, "Maggot Brain" by The Funkadelic, but surely the point of Rock is to bounce around the room a bit to some lovely meaty sounds? If you just want clever ****ing guitars go listen to Television or something.

Now, tooth-sinkable and up-and-jump riff-happy is a tricky combo. The entire Stooges album "Fun House" is a good start. If you just want something to pull you along, how about, say, "Fish Fry" by Big Black, "The Accelerator" by Primal Scream and "Magnetic City" by Silverbullit?

                        Scabby is "unconventional"

but even he can accept some of the led zep songs (not the boring ones) rock!

of course there are other things too more modern. that "rock" without you having to endure endless solos but sometimes they are also part of the charm

Do you remember an old song called "Alright Now"? It was by a band called Free. It is on an album called Fire and Water (see http://www.artistdirect.com/store/ar...,88711,00.html)

That album definitely rocks. I played it until the cassette stretched and broke. Then I sticky taped the cassette together again. Always played at high volume. Very much the same vibe as "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You."

If I have to pick out songs, I'd suggest "Heavy Load" first, but I could have picked any song on that album.

                            As for Led Zep:
Stay away from anything after Houses of the Holy album. If you're looking for songs that "rock", try LZ 1,2 and 4 first. Then see how far hooked you are before getting 3, SongRemainsSame and Houses of Holy. By this stage, these last three will probably become your favourites. I don't really recommend Presence, Phys Graffiti or Coda.
"I'm so happy I could go and drive a car crash!"
"What do you mean do I rape strippers too? Is that an insult?"
                            - Pekka

most every song by zeppelin rocks!

ramble on is my current favorite by them
