but like ramo said, there are more non gun murders in the US than all types of murders in the far majority of EU nations, so we can completely rule out guns from this argument, because even if guns didn't exist at all in the US, we'd still lead in murders
the thing is much of the gun violence and gun related crime is connected with the war on drugs
I see your point. It is the part we usually don't get over here (and Bowling for Columbine concentrates on the gun issue mainly).
Again there's the whole poverty issue again, especially in a society that is as materialistic as the US (as Kontiki said). The "don't haves" see the "haves" and get jealous. This frustration then gets taken out on the people close them, like spouses or work colleagues.
That being said people get beaten up a lot in the UK every weekend after closing time. Even in such a nice town as Cambridge you have to walk around fights quite a lot. Not quite sure what makes europeans stop at a certain point, and americans continue...
lightblue, we have loooooooooots of fights too. When the bars close, the fights start. They're just everywhere.
I mean I've seen lots of bar fights too. Just rock and rumble! But it stops there when guys get too tired of beating each other and police comes and sprays them.
Sometimes they stab each other, maybe that's why all swedes and russians think we are drunk people with knives. But we don't go all the way... There's a point where people Stop.

I couldn't agree more. If I'd ever move to the US (or another nation where gun ownership is common), which isn't unthinkable, I would never allow a gun in my house either.
You don't have to be stronger if you punch someone., though flying triangle choke is much more cooler way to submit the attacked .

Your personal prejudices/phobias are yours to deal with.
Actually..it was my OPINION..my thoughts there ARE mine to deal with...whats the point of your comment?
Your choice.
And I said it wasn't? again what's your point?
I guess that might work for you... so long as you are stronger than whomever you wish to punch in the throat.
Don't need to be stronger. Again,..what's your point...
you're one of those people that just speak for the sake of speaking, right? You like the sound of your own voice even the though the words that come out have no substance whatsoever?
if you are GOING to comment on my quotes...at LEAST have SOME kind of point, please.

I'd agree in large part with the lack of social services, but I think there is something else that Moore totally failed to address and/or got completely worng in Bowling for Columbine - the fundamental difference in attitudes between most Americans and people elsewhere (note I said most, there are clearly exceptions on both sides). America is a much more individualistic and greed driven society than much of the rest of the developed world. By this, I mean the highest priority in the US has been and is "how can I get the most for myself (or my family, whatever)". The US has this ingrained in their culture, education, constitution, everything. It's all about individual rights and liberties. Now, that's not to say that it's necessarily a bad thing, just that it's often taken to the extreme. And, along with this, often comes (rightly or wrongly) a certain measure of fear and paranoia that others will try to take what you have.
Personally, I think this explains alot about the rates of violence in the US. Inner city violence, while undoubtably linked to poverty and a lack of social services, is also fuelled by the fact that the greatest goal one can aspire to is personal wealth and power. The lure of criminal activity in these situations is so great because one can make more money and fame (infamy, really) at a much faster rate than attempting "honest" work.
One might also look back at history approx 80 years ago. Something about a national ban on a certain drug, and the gang violence that sprang up as a result. Seems oddly familiar for some reason.
(Also brings to mind the phrase "sometimes History doesn't repeat itself, sometimes she lets fly with a club and screams WHY DIDN'T YOU LISTEN LAST TIME?!)
