The vast majority of people who died were poor immigrants and crew members. One of the chief effects of the disaster was the drawing of more attention to the plight of such people who were essentially left to fend for themselves while the wealthy escaped in lifeboats. It was the last gasp for the Victorian legacy of rights based on class stratification. It also ushered in a host of innovations in travel safety, wireless communications and ship design. It was not a meaningless event.

So many people think the Titanic was a very important historical event. Bah... there are so many more important things in history... you almost never hear about how the Japanese massacred the Chinese during the 30's, for instance, or how the Turks massacred the Armenians...
I don't think most histories of the Titanic disaster exaggerate its importance. It is a social event, not a geo-political one. No one will assert it changed political history. But you can't deny it had tremendous impact on Western society. The mere fact that it has become a part of common language and is so written about, filmed, etc. and inspires such fascination shows it has had an impact on culture. Not a day goes by that someone doesn't compare some dire situation to "like being on the Titanic," or something like that.

One has to think that any event that is so ingrained in our culture as this is must be of some significance.

The amount of effort and money put in to this Titanic legend worship sickens me.
We're talking prior to the film, right? I mean, prior to the film, not much was spent on it. It certainly didn't draw the kind of enthusiasts as things like Star Trek, Star Wars, WWII, etc.

And when the movie came out, it only got worse... then having to hear about "oh Titanic is the highest grossing movie ever, it's the greatest movie of all time"... PLEASE... Leonardo DiCrapio is a terrible actor...
I agree about that stuff, but I don't see it as affecting the event itself. My despising of the movie is irrelevant to the disaster itself.

I was talking mainly about the movie in terms of legend-worship.
To us, it is the BEAST.

Interesting… it always seems like you spend more time criticizing what you don't like than pimping what that which you do like…
In any case, for me it's always been different because I never ever ever listened to the radio.
So I'll find a song and really love it and I'll show it to other people and they'll be like "ewww I can't stand that song! They played it so many times! Meshugina!"
And I'll be like, dude, it's good!
              And it is!
"mono has crazy flow and can rhyme words that shouldn't, like Eminem"

Transformers... I still like the old stuff, but the newer stuff is crap. Popularity went to their head and that made the shows suck. Besides none of the kids these days even know who the characters really are.

Also, I use to enjoy going to Dave Mathews Band concerts. Use to be able to get tickets at the door, and sit with about 500 of your closest friends and enjoy some good music. Now, you can't even get tickets. If you do, its you and about 5,000 yuppie frat kids all which won't stop singing the song! You can't sing so stop it, and let me enjoy the show for crying out loud!

See, Boris, I don't hate things because they are popular. I hate things that have become popular because of what the popularity does to those things. I still watch the old Transformers and I still by Dave albums. I just don;t go to the shows any more.

How the Hell does changing the name from the Philosopher's Stone to the Sorcerer's Stone (and that was the only change) make you hate the series? Are you that sensitive to change?

Apolyton is a lost cause, full of worshippers of Bad Rock. I have acquired a reputation of having bad tastes in music here, so I pursue my recommendation elsewhere.
