A Senate majority leader from Mississippi is in trouble for saluting the outgoing President Pro Tem of the Senate, a South Carolinian. A president from Texas just replaced a president from Arkansas by defeating a former vice-president from Tennessee. While the Speaker of the House is from Illinois, that's only because the old speaker, from Georgia, screwed up so badly he had to resign, and then his replacement, from Louisiana, had to fess up to being adulterous. Meanwhile the government is controlled by the party that thinks taxes and homosexuals are just about equally evil, and that would like to return prayer to public schools -- all this in a country where forms of evangelical Protestantism are the fastest-growing religions.

    Um, who won again?

I just wish they'd won back in 1865, and had their own little third-world backwater to govern instead of messing with my country.

Well, look at the bright side. Obviously your candidates were even worse, because y'all went and voted for what we scraped up.

It seems to be more of an issue nationally than it is here.

          (c) The Democrats have neither the credibility or any alternative voice that can make a workable issue out of this.
They could bring out the "former" KKK member.

Byrd may have been a KKK member, and both Wallace and Thurdmond ran on pro-segregation plankc's, but all of the have also stated they were wrong and have changed their views. Lott seem to be the only braniac to actually still commonly get himself into trouble voicing pro-segregation views...

Krugman today in the NYTimes wrote an interesting article about the South; I don't agree wih most of it, but I do wonder at one basic point: Why do the states that gain the most out of Federalism in terms of services and development aid (The South, the West, those states either too poor or with population's too small to matter) always vote agains the idea of Federalism while those states that loose (California, the Northeast, those huge or rich states) by sending more money out as federal taxes than they will ever recoup always vote for it? If some hick from Mississippi doesn't care for income taxes, then why should I send him mine to pay for his subsidies and roads? Hell, if NY state and NJ stopped paying their federal taxes and kept all the money they export to Mississippi or Alabama, or Arkansas or Nebraska, Montana, or S. Dakota then our defecits would be far lower. It must be somehting in the water.....

Kinda like when Michael Moore had people standing on the side of a highway in Newt Gingrich's district in GA. They held up placards that said "Honk if You Hate the Federal Gov't." Of course, dozens honked gleefully and cheered.

A mile down the road, someone else held up a placard, "Then Get Off this Federally-Funded Highway."

Thats a good way to get Mr. tax cut Bush to shut it.

I am sick of this country of being ruled by southerners, I sure wish Humphry beat Reagan or Mondale beat Bush #1. (I'm from Minnesota, and we need a president from here.)

Oh yeah, anyone who likes Thurdmond, I think, is ipso facto a racist. (yeah, I'm talking to you DinoDoc. )

Why? I wasn't even around to vote for the man in the 1940's.

Worked for Bush, especially when he asked Brazil's president "Are there blacks in Brazil too?"

Lott apologized today for the comments.

                              HOWEVER

Drudge is reporting that Lott said the exact same thing and a campaign rally in 1980 after a Thurmond speech.

                              Tsk tsk, Mr. Majority Leader...
