Apparently, since the audience gasped and fell silent, the people attending weren't expecting such a "nicety."

He could have said any number of other nice things honoring Thurmond's career instead of lamenting about the "problems" (i.e. desegregation) that he would have liked to have seen avoided.

You say dumb things at someone's birthday. People fall over themselves to say this person did good things. Stuff happens.

I think he's just a walking body. He shouldn't have run in the last election. Politics aside, he's not capable of representing his state since he doesn't vote very often. These days he just does what his staff tells him to do. Would be great if we could replace them all with Commies and watch the hilarity.

And lest we think it's partisan:

Recent and archived work by David Frum for National Review.

The conservatives are as upset about this as anyone.

I always do. Like when Dems say Kennedy was a good President .

I might not be wrong to state that it might be partisan here in the OT (which is a very partisan place. The last thing you will ever hear is *I'm wrong*)

Lott should try to explain his comment, and saying that he was just being nice to strum doesn't cut it. there are many ways you could have said that other than this way: his previous statemen followed by "because we all know strum is a man of integrity, who would have served this nation well as its president!" (No comment on his policies, simply on his character as a man and leader). But he won't. I can't judge his internal feelings on the matter so i can't say eh truly believes what he said, but agin, he's got some explaining to do.

Well of course he should explain himself, but I mean, it isn't like he said it out of the blue. Look at the context! I'm sure the only reason he said it was because it was Strom's 100th. But he should explain himself because of the hubub.

I agree. But also, Lott is not just anyone. Anyone can make whatever comment he or she wants and it usually is no big deal. But as a Representative of the People, you have to be more careful, birthday or no. It is a mark of unprofessionality to say things like that, and really brings into question Lott, no matter what he meant.

Imran demostrates the lack of integrety the modern Republican Party has.

(Note, this should in no way be taken to assume that this author believes that the Democratic Party has any integrety either).

God what a dumb, dumb comment. What on Earth was he thinking?

Lott seems to be having diahrea of the mouth lately.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I wish we could put issue behind us. Obviously, there are some Southerners who do not know they lost.

That's how you cure diarrhoea? I hope you're not a doctor.
