Um.... John Lennon couldn't run for President. You have to be born in the US to be President.
That's why they had him born in the UK!

Is that the actual rule - if so when was it introduced, because George Washington and several other presidents weren't born in the US. They were born in English colonies.

It is a rule. IIRC, you also have to be 40 years old or older?

I don't know when it was enacted. Obviously it was quite a bit after the country was founded...

          The age is 35 IIRC.

I'm surprised though. Surely there are many Americans born outside the US. Does this mean they cannot become US President on a technicality?

35 is correct. If they are born outside of the US to US citizens, then they are US citizens and can run for president. I'm pretty sure.

I am not so sure this is true. Perhaps both parents have to be citizens. A guy I know from highschool knocked up a Venezuelan chick this year and they went back to Venezuela to get married and have the kid. I think there was some turmoil because they thought the baby wouldn't have U.S. citizenship.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

Yes, that is the actual rule. It's in the Constitution.

                  Section 2, Clause 5:

No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

The Founders were dealt with in the 'citizen at the time of this Constitution' .
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
                  - John 13:34-35 (NRSV)

So what would have stopped John Lennon becoming President if the UK adopted the US constitution?

                                Ron Paul.

Of all the people I can think of who actually have a shot at the post, he's the one I'd like to see there.
