You're talking individual examples when I'm talking about the general practice. If someone says that covers and sampling are inherently bad then all I have to do is bring up one good example. I can find a number of artists that use strictly original material that are plain cr*p.

and then stifles innovation by showing that it is easier to use other peoples work to make money than it is to be innovative and the best at what they do.
Innovative approaches to covers and sampling will be as successful as any innovative artistic approaches are. Derivative crap whether it is a cover, sampled music or "original" work is just that.
