  • Does North Korea have the right to nuclear weapons?

    I say yes.

News on the radio said N. Korea does have nuclear weapons and they claim they have the right to keep them despite what the U.S. says.

This does not bother me much. Despite the fact that N. Korea has medium range missles that can reach the west coast of the U.S. and the Hoover dam (where I live essentually).

Sure this changes the balance of power. And we might actually have to listen to what they have to say. But it will just created a neutral stand off like the cold war. We can survive that

The argument that NK has the right to have nuke weapons is debatable, and I'm not getting into that. However, I will say that NK did signed an agreement with the US and neighboring Pacific Rim countries stating that they will not build or research these weapons in return for cheap oil. You can not debait the fact that they violated this agreement.

NK has chosen a perfect time to confront the US with this news. With the US concentrating on Iraq they can now broker another deal to prop up their disaster of a regime.

From I hear, the US is the only one that is doing anyway. I could be wrong.

Every country has a right to have certain kind of weapons. The issue here though, is that whether other countries want it to have the weapon or not.

A more pressing question is, does anyone have the 'right' to own nuclear weapons?

The US actually doesn't want anyone to have the Nukes, including UK. The US government was quite pissed when UK detonated their first one.

USSR was very scared when China detonated their first one and thought about an invasion of China. Chairman Mao simply kissed up to the Americans who then threatened to nuke USSR should China be invaded.

As far as I'm concerned, soveriegn nations can develop whichever weapons they want.

HOWEVER, North Korea signed an agreement with SK, Japan and the US which stipulated that they stop trying to develop nukes in exchange for aid: food, fuel oil and assistance on the nuclear power plants, IIRC. They broke that agreement.

Any country has right to have nuclear weapons. But any country that is a potential victim of those weapons also has the right to do anything it wants to stop the first country from getting them.
