Experience is key but having the right equipment and the best training is also important.

Luckily the U.S. has all three.

Oerdin, How do you know the training methods of other countries and forces? ... Or equipment for that matter.
I don't think new = good every time. But it's still safe to say that the US has good equipments. I just wonder what is your source of other forces training, since I'd like to do some comparing too. Yes yes I know, it's a bit impossible.

Experience is one key factor too, and the US definitely has that one, also Israel and Britain too.. and some other countries too.

The US has good special forces, although their qualities really aren't advertised enough to know whether or not they are the best (Mr. T notwithstanding ). I would guess that the US special forces have a broader range of capabilities than any other, though.

Likely, the best special forces are those that take from the largest pool of willing soldiers. For the US, I guess that means about 1-2% of a standing armed forces. This is without support for the special forces, and not taking into account the very valuable reserves in the special forces (Psy Ops, government affairs, etc.).

The US definitely has the best accompanying capabilities. For instance, US special forces can designate targets for pinpoint air support. I guess the Brits also have some/most/all of these capabilities. This leverages the value of the US special forces.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

What good is it to have "great" special forces if you don't use them? Or, how do you know they are great unless you do use them?

From my understanding, we took out the Taliban and al Qaida in Afghanistan using our special forces. They seemed to be highly effective. Very impressive.

Would those be the vaunted "Northern Alliance" special forces?

Its a meaningless question. As Panag has already said experience (i.e. combat experience) is the most important factor. Look to which units have the most of that.

"And thats all I have to say about that".

Ned, US was effective in Afghanistan, though I disagree with Al Qaeda, they are still operative. They don't want to go head to head with the US anyway. It's hard to say how they were affected, but they tooks some beating. But all in all, the part that special forces had was a success..

I also agree with DanS post. About that pintpointing though.. how's that special? Almost every country has that technology to my knowledge. I'm speaking in behalf of western armies.

SpencerH, right, experience is important. But other forces that hadn't had the opportunity to show their abilities might have something to offer too, I bet everyone does good intelligence on their operations, get vital information of how new stuff works in the field etc, then simulate it in their own training. Of course it's not the same, but it can be good substitute. So we shouldn't count others out easily.. thought it gets impossible here, because we don't have the info on other forces .

You do realize that there were also special forces from Britain, Canada, Germany, Australia and a few other countries there, right?

Not to take anything away from US special forces, but they certainly weren't acting alone.
