What's the Difference Between Cosmonauts and Astronauts?

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Well, I think (or I hope) that Greece is now a full member of the European Space Agency. It wasn't before because the cheap Greek state didn't want to pay the "subscription fees" thus denying young Greeks of their right to dream and forcing them out of Greece and Europe to NASA.
I think a Greek (by now Greek American) has already gone to space but I'm not 100% sure.
We call them Astronauts (Astronautes) BTW although Cosmonauts is also used but not frequently.
Even though, etymologically Cosmonaut is more accurate.
They go to space, and even if they go to the moon, they go to a planet not a star.

@ this thread.
The difference between cosmonauts and astronauts is first and foremost that cosmonauts were first in space. Therefore, using the drug terminology, it is 'cosmonaut' that is the brand name for spacemen; whereas 'astronaut', 'taikonaut' and whatever-else-may-appear are merely generic names, which should not be taken too seriously unless for political reasons, which is actually the case.Freedom is just unawareness of being manipulated.
