  • Che, a practice that you could try is to make a nice resume (CV) not longer than 2 pages, photocopy it and send it to dozens of companies that are in your field of work.

Just get their addresses and send it to them.

I only send like 5 resumes to the companies in my field of work. (isn't that lazy or what? )

I remember I once got a call out of the blue from a company to which I had send a resume. (wasn't what I was looking for but it was a nice surprise nevertheless).

It won't cost you anything, it is very easy to do (just get some addresses, the more the better) and just send your resumes to them.

Some of them, at least the serious onces, even if they have no places or interest in hiring you then and there or call you for an interview, they will store your resume and keep it handy for future reference...

Sometimes they even have a "net" of distribution of the resumes. For example, the call I got was from an affiliated company of the one I had send my resume to.

    Good luck again Chegitz

Yes it never hurts to be out there. You never know when some idiot will offer more than you're worth. I've switched jobs a couple of time that way.

        • Well it is a killer being on the dole. I have been on for 7 months and I am doing some temp work. However it is unlikely the job will continue past december

          • I will also contribute if PM'd an address. Things are tight here as well, but I can manage some to help someone out.
If you want low pay and quick work, go to a temp agency, perhaps a technical one because of your skills. I recently finished a month long stint at Freightliner that is now up, but have a phone interview with a large outsourcing tech support company tomorrow.

Better get me that address quick...I'll do overnight mail.

            • I don't see that there is such a thing as destiny though Sneak, things just happen. I am hoping that things work out well in my life as in che's life...it's a difficult thing...

              • Hey Che, sorry to hear about the finances...

If you PM me, I should be able to add something to the ‘war chest’ by Paypal…

I’m no stranger to the odd bout of hardship, so I know what it’s like.

Actually it’s a bummer about the vicious circle re the benefit and getting a job that pays enough. The important thing is to get working no matter if it’s not your field and to keep plugging away with job applications. Sneak and PH are talking about whether destiny exists or not – I believe you make your destiny, by getting out there and taking the bull by the horns!

When we got to Sydney for example, in my naivety I thought it would be easy to get an IT job of some sort but hog-tied as I am with this stupid work visa that only allows me to work in one place for three months – it has been practically impossible! So after finally giving up and re focusing my energies I finally landed a decently paid job co-ordinating the facilities management of Vodafone sites nationwide…

Of course, over here if I didn’t get myself a job I wouldn’t be getting any money whatsoever!

So hang in there, keeping plugging away and remember that if you take me up on my offer, I expect a place to stay next time I’m in the US…

                Best of luck!

                  • If you're going to express your gratitude you could at least do us the favor of feeling like Elmer P. Dowd. "Harvey" was a much better movie, and light years more funny.

I loved the parts where Harvey and Elmer crashed the luncheon party and the part where the psychiatrist began confiding to Harvey.

                      • I had a similiar situation last year after I graduated from college only to be hit by the worst job market in two decades. It sucked but I was forced to continue working at the same low paying place I had worked all through college even though I was supposedly an educated graduate.

Fortunately, it paid the bills until I could land a much better paying job as a geologist.

                        • Che, sorry to hear that but there is a simple solution. Marry the Bunny (small service in a relative's house with wedding bands courtesy of your new Wal-Mart card) and collect the wedding checks.

                          • LabSupport is a good temp agency, and while they concentrate on scientific (read 'laboratory') technical services, they landed me no fewer than four computer-related assignments.

                            • It is a beautiful day, and I'm going bikeriding . . . over to a temp agency I know of. It's a few miles from here, but they have been recommended by a few different HR people.
