I always leave a good tip for good service. For average service, just double the GST. For exceptional service, more.

If somebody does a lousy job, they get nothing. You make $2.25 an hour waiting tables, it's YOUR job to give me good service. It's not my job to pay your wages.
But, I will for good service.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust!
It's not that people 29+ are BAD looking, exactly… They're just more mature looking so I typically wouldn't hit on anyone over 25… I'm just saying I guess… I don't know I guess she just looked.
Ok she was really pretty. I made an exception.
Don't be mad with me JohnT…

Glad I live in Australia, where wages are decent and tipping is an "if you feel like it" proposition.
That's good if you work in the service industry, bad if you're just a regular customer.
Service quality is what these people get paid for. Crappy service, crappy pay -- good service, good pay. It's a simple concept, if some people weren't so stingy, and realize that if no one tipped then everyone would end up paying more for food anyway. So do your part, tip the damn waiter.
It works well in countries like Canada, where people are generally very considerate and generous.

And yes, we upper middle-class white guys are major butt-wipes when it comes to retailing: we know what we want, we don't want to be bothered with the stupid patter about your wonderful warranty plans, and we don't have the time to waste looking around for all the extras. Deal with it.
Oh, I'm just saying...doesn't upset me personally, as I am (or at least will be) classified as a middle-upper class white. You people just make it hard for me to look good in front of the managers, that's all
Why I bet that in the right context gray hair can even be… sexy?

I'm a starving student but I still tip ALWAYS 15% usually closer to 20%. Working in a restaurant for years'll do that to you...
Also what goes around comes around when you have a favorite restaurant or two (Thai Garden's and Mamoun's Falafels) being a good customer will get you a lot better service (and even food!) after hanging out there for years than being a cheap bastard.
The squirrel is right. Did I just say that? At my favorite restaurants, since I'm a good customer, I will receive special dishes from the kitchen regularly. I don't care how many times I go to McD's, I never get anything special. In fact, I consider myself lucky if the food is hot.

Ya - same here
I remember a time in Australia when people would get offended if you offered them a tip. Still happens sometimes. They do a good job because it is their job, they aren't your slave.
Tipping is a nightmare if you come from a country where it isn't expected because workers have pride and get decent wages.
Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..
Also always always always tip in cash, that way the waiters don't have to pay taxes on it and it counts as more money. Not that I'm condoning tax evasion , but you might as well get as much bang for your tipping buck as possible.
They should be declaring tips as income anyway, right?
Don't you love when the government gets more money too?

Its funny, and sometimes not so funny, watching American tourists try to boss around Australian waiters. The golden rule here is be polite to the serving staff and talk to them like equals.
I've seen bossy Americans completely ignored, even come close to having a bowl of food tipped over their head or worse. The Australian customers would join the waiters in ejecting a rude demanding customer. They think staff here work for tips - they don't.
