  • Why exactly are gay marriages not recognized in the U.S. ?

I've always wondered what exactly are the objections to two men or two women getting married in the US. Espiecilly since the New York Time's decision to include gay marriages (or life long commitements) has caused all sorts of news.

I've always been of the belief that you could marry anything that is a semi-intelligent adult and your not attached to someone else.
When one is someone, why should one want to be something?

I thought they were recognized in some states?

One state, Vermont, officially recognizes gay marriage. However, thanks to a law passed by congress called the Defense of Marriage Act, other states aren't obligated to recognize gay marriages performed in other states. The tax laws and rights that are given to married couples by the Federal Government also do not apply to the Vermont gay couples, as the Federal Government doesn't recognize them.

Many municipal, county and state governments will give partner benefits to gay couples when a member of the couple is an employee of the government. San Francisco also requires companies it contracts with to have gay partner benefits, I believe.

Redfern, that is true. I have to find articles on a paramilitary group called the "AAA" in Latin America... what they do to gays, or anybody who opposes them for that matter.

            Edit:

Originally an army-linked paramilitary organization thought to have conducted much of the dirty war of the 1970s, the Alliance was reported to have been revived after police raids on several residences in May 1985 yielded firearms, explosives and three arrests. The group has since been linked to a number of terrorist acts, including several kidnappings and the destruction of the facilities of the moderate Radio Belgrano station. Its alleged founder Jose Lopez Rega surrendered to US authorities at Miami in March 1986 and was extradited to Argentina in July to face a variety of charges, including fraud and murder.

            Leader: Anibal Gjordon (in prison).
Their leader is in prison but attacks are on the rise again.

No states recognize gay marriage, not even Vermont. Vermont has something seperate for gays, called a civil union. It's kinda like marriage.

The Defense of Marriage Act violates the Constitution's Full Faith and Credit clause. It's unconstitutional. If one state ever legalizes gay marriage, all states will have to recognize the marriage, at least until the Constitution is changed.
