I think that there is a love-hate relation between those two.
They both have helped the other in the past, but none of them really wants to fully acknowledge the help they received.
I think those two love each other, but they are unwilling to acknowledge it, so they tenderly hate each other.
In fact, they are competitors on some points.
They both claim to be the mother/champion of democracy. The US for being the first in the world, France for being the one who spread it throughout Europe (world?). They both wants to teach the rest of the world what 'real' democracy is. "Don't belive the other ones, WE are the true democracy, the others are just false prophets"
Between Suez and Panama, what is the best?
- Suez, answer the French, because it was the first.
- Panama, answer the American, because it was the hardest to build.
And you know the old joke:
Sorry sir, but may I ask you your opinion about world feeding problems?
- What does 'feeding' mean, answered the Polish ?
- What does 'opinion' mean, answered the Russian ?
- What does 'world' mean, answered the French/American?
works for both...
and you may add:
- What does 'sorry' mean, answered the Parisian?
