  • I think that there is a love-hate relation between those two.
They both have helped the other in the past, but none of them really wants to fully acknowledge the help they received.

I think those two love each other, but they are unwilling to acknowledge it, so they tenderly hate each other.

In fact, they are competitors on some points.
They both claim to be the mother/champion of democracy. The US for being the first in the world, France for being the one who spread it throughout Europe (world?). They both wants to teach the rest of the world what 'real' democracy is. "Don't belive the other ones, WE are the true democracy, the others are just false prophets"

Between Suez and Panama, what is the best?
    - Suez, answer the French, because it was the first.
    - Panama, answer the American, because it was the hardest to build.

And you know the old joke:
Sorry sir, but may I ask you your opinion about world feeding problems?
    - What does 'feeding' mean, answered the Polish ?
    - What does 'opinion' mean, answered the Russian ?
    - What does 'world' mean, answered the French/American?

    works for both...

    and you may add:
    - What does 'sorry' mean, answered the Parisian?

    • The problem the french have is their delusions of grandeur
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

THAT at least is a good illustration about WHY Frenchs and Americans have tense relationships.

Frenchs are somehow irritated by the american habits to say that nobody could do anything without them. They are also somehow irritated by the constant "we saved your arses in WW2" and rewriting history to give themselve a better role (should I remind our JohnT friend that Germany had allies too, just like France, in WW1 ?).

I suppose that Americans are pushed to these behavior because they are themselve irritated about the dismissive attitude of French toward them.

That's a vicious circle of course.

                            Oh and BTW...

                            a. Not defending their homeland properly in WW1 and WW2.

                            b. Not being able to properly decolonize, leaving the US holding the bag (Korea, Vietnam).

The freakin' pansies can't fight worth a damn and their most famous ruler wore wigs and stockings. How can you not scorn them?
I'm sorry, but I have to do my patriotic duty by scorning the total ignorance that American have about History

                            1) WW1 : I suppose you base the assumption about defending the homeland about the fact that the front was stabilized in the north part of the France. I always considered that being able to stop an ennemy that has more material and manpower, and block it for four years, while sending troops on other frontlines, was being able to defend, but I may be mistaken

                            2) WW2 : it's probably convenient to forget that EVERYONE was totally crushed by the german army until 1942/1943 (including the courageous British), and consider that French were the only one to fall back. But as convenient it is, it just does not make it truer.

                            3) Indochina : Okay, on this one, we sucked plainly

                            4) Korea : I was not aware that Korea was a french colony. You learn at any age I suppose

                            [DUMB PATRIOTIC MODE OFF]

Darn, how I hate these ridiculous "history" arguing which has much more to do with d*ck size than with true facts.
