  • The Sorry State of Music in America

Recently, I've been in the mood for some culture and I've been listening to my lean library of classical music. A few days ago I noticed I didn't have Beethoven's Symphony #5 or Piano Concerto #1. So I go out to the local Best Buy and all I can find in their pathetic excuse of a classical music section are some Beethoven compilation (ie crap) CDs. The 1st movement of #5, one movement from a piano sonata etc. etc. They didn't have 1 CD with the entire #5 on it. Something is wrong with American culture when I can go to the store and see 100 CDs from manufactured barbie doll Shakira, but can't find one of the greatest musical works ever.

Those of you who have kids, play some classical music for them; and support keeping music education in our schools. I know people will listen to whatever they're going to listen to but most kids in the US aren't brought up to appreciate good music. When people value a girl shaking her booty in a music video more than the thoughtful, complex, genius inspired invention of a classical symphony then our values are in the wrong place.

    That's it. Bye.

Hmm, seems you should try a music store. Or online, since a good deal of those stores are in the US.

Best Buy for classical works? Why?

Best Buy is usually used for pop music, it is after all a one stop shopping place for all entertainment, technology, movies, and music that is popular now. If you want classical try a Barnes and Noble that has a decent CD collection or many local stores that cater to that.

Bah. Why would I want to teach my children that music is a dry, intellectual, art-establishment excercise? I'm going to subject them to the high points of pop perfection instead, and ignore all the languid classical nonsense designed for senile old women who can't stand the though of music actually sticking in your head or making you want to dance.

Nothing against classical music, but I was raised on rock and I imagine my children (assuming I have some) will be too.

I would suggest checking out one of the Borders Books&Music stores.

My guess is that Snapcase's children would eventually rebel against him by becoming prog. rock and classical listeners.

If I could only find a decent pianist, who could play Beethoven's 5th concerto. I have to have two CDs for it. One compilation with the first movement which is done excellently by Silvia Capova, whose "Apassionatta" is great as weill. But the hack on my complete 5th CD can keep time.

Grrr, that's a pretty decent store. And nice selection Mark, the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Berstein . The Vienna sure makes a lot of CDs.
