Recently, I've been in the mood for some culture and I've been listening to my lean library of classical music. A few days ago I noticed I didn't have Beethoven's Symphony #5 or Piano Concerto #1. So I go out to the local Best Buy

Oh, I understand now. You're an idiot.

What I find sorry about the state of music in America is that they lump together house, techno and trance into 'dance'.

Percussion. Ugh. it is time for somebody to discover that the bass drum is not the main instrument in a band.

It's not just pop, it's all genres of music that are falling apart. But especially pop.
                      I refute it thus!

for percussion listen to Paul Simon. I'm not a big fan of his but I love all the instruments his bands use.

Dissident - quite true. If only there were more brass instruments and/or african drumming in music these days.

I shouldn't have used Kick Out the Jams as an example, actually, since it's a great song.

The sponsor in Wayne's World was dead on. Kids do exactly what they're told -- they keep hitting the feeder bar until they're out of quarters. The trick is and has always been to package their transparent reactionary restlessness and sell it back to them in safe, bite-sized, retail-priced chunks. All they're after is f*cking, but even listening to them blast rap is better than having the children f*cking.

It's never been any different -- I'm sure Sumerian mothers screamed "turn it down, we have children sleeping here!," and Sumerian teenagers (well, 8 year olds, since teenagers were middle aged) just sang louder and wailed on air-lute.

I don't see the contradiction between teenage rebellion and teens litsening to stupid pop, but maybe that's just me. I mean, sure, you get watered-down commercial nonsense along the lines of Pat Boone or Nickelback, but the teens that go for the safest options are usually the least rebellious ones.

I'm probably a hedonist and a fool, but good, commercial pure pop as hated by the art establishment seems perfectly viable as an instrument of rebellion to me. How can really groovy, good pop which sticks in people's heads and makes them dance around be a method for achieving lethargy, when it gets people moving? I see art rebellion as a complement to political/parental rebellion, not as something that steals away from it.
