Nor did Nixon think of Canada when he attacked a U.S. balance of payments crisis in August 1971 by slapping a surcharge on imports. This measure profoundly threatened Canadian trade and employment, and the damage would have been magnified had the Auto Pact been cancelled, as very nearly happened.
So Asher it was not the NEP that threatened the auto pact. It was U.S. balance of payments crisis in August 1971....
Look just trying to teach you proper Canadian history here not the propaganda you have learned out there.
Sorry for trying, just go back to being a happy illinformed Albertan....Sorry for bursting your bubble...
Interesting enough in my 20 years living there very few Albertans over the age of 20 that did not know all this stuff. They did not buy into the governments propaganda machine. Kill-em kleen( that's for you Loaf) must have honed his skills since I left....

Musical interlude...
Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small,
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all.
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall.
And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall,
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call.
Call Alice
When she was just small.
When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low.
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know.
When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead,
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"
Remember what the dormouse said:
"Feed your head. Feed your head. Feed your head"(\__/)

Foreign ownership isn't such a bad thing, the world is getting to be such a globalized force, US foreign ownership in Canada shouldn't be such a critical threat that thousands of jobs are expendable simply so we can have a nice percentage so you feel more independent.
Things have changed with Asia supplying more investment as economies in that region improve. As well, European companies are expanding more overseas than they did before the 1980s (This is a gut assumption based on the state of many European economies at that time).
There was also the concern that if foreign companies are pumping out the oil then profits are being siphoned out of Canada to other nations.
Oil is also a unique industry in that it is a finite resource. If we pump it out of the ground faster today, then we run out of it quicker. If exploration is delayed then it will last longer. This may not seem like a big deal today, but in the 70s there was a concern about using up our natural resources.Golfing since 67
