You don't see too many Biblical literalists with a college education (and no, Bible College does not count). They are mostly angry southern whites with a hate-on for Darwin and the Warren Court. It would be interesting to see the poll results broken down by education and class.

For non fundies there's a VERY strong correlation between education and belief in evolution. However, for fundies (who are a good chunk of the american population) no such correlation exists at all, and instead there's one between religiousity and belief in creationism.

The extreme fundamentalist sectors within Christianity will never be able to successfully appeal to the mainstream followers of any Christian denomination.

The extreme fundamentalism however, seemed to have increased its reactionary attacks against rising divorce rates, casual sex, AIDS research, sex education, and sexual orientation issues.

Polls like this are hideously inaccurate, because people have a tendency to lie about their religious practices and beliefs. F'rinstance, when people are asked "do you go to church every Sunday," the number of "yes" responses is always far in excess of the actual number of people who go to church every Sunday. People say "yes I go to church every Sunday" because they think that they're supposed to, not because it's the truth.

Same thing probably goes with believing that the Bible is the literal word of god. I went to a religious college and it was inevitable that I'd meet a few people who claimed that the Bible was the literal word of god if asked, yet (when asked about specific passages) they would claim that certain parts of the Bible had to be reinterpreted from a modern point of view (or something along similar lines). In other words, their answer to the poll question "is the Bible the literal word of god" would be in direct contradiction to their actual beliefs on the matter.

The end. A big question when? I believed the bible when it said several thing has to happen before the end time comes. Now we do know that after the great war there will a 1,000 years of peace. So if the end times start tomorrow, planet Earth still has a 1,000 years to go. If I remember right one of the several thing that has to happen is rebuilding Solomon Temple for the third time. There is a small problem with that right now, because I believed the Dome of the Rock is now located on the same site as Solomon temple was. If I'm wrong I'm sure one of you will correct it. So how is the Dome going to be removed. Is a man going to do it or is a natural disaster going to remove it? Remember this is only one of signs. Plus when the first sign does happen will we recognize it or not. And after the first sign is given how lone before the great war will start? A week, month, year or years.

They've been doing so for decades with enourmous success, the mainline Churches have been in deep decline since the 50s while evangelical and pentecostal denomenations have been exploding in size and numbers.

A "hate-on"? Is that what I think it is? Is it like this little man's thingee? ->

I guess we have a new name for him now. Instead of "do it now" he will henceforth be known as "MR. Hate-On"!

Both of your examples are idiots. I have zero respect for either because neither of them is a skeptic.

Europeans who make generalizations about America often ignore the intense regional differences. Fundamentalist Christianity is dominant in the South through the Bible Belt, and in rural areas in general. But in predominantly Catholic or secular areas, people tend much more towards European views on polls such as the Time poll SM cited.

But you all know that. I'm just posting for fun now.

Believing the ludicrous because there is a modicum of good ideas hiding in it is you in a nutshell. Urantia is definitly nuts. I know you don't agree but I really can't understand why you accept something that is so seriously wrong on so many things.

It is funny in places though. I will give it that.

Smart people can be idiots. The term is not limited to IQ.

That is because that is what you do. I don't see a lot of value in accepting things that are verifiably wrong. I looked at the books. Both your Urantia and Rogan's Bible. I find them both wanting in terms of reality.

Now if you want to debate this stuff thats fine by me Caligastia. I like debate. I didn't make any personal attacks on anyone in this thread and even in other threads where I have it has almost always been in direct responce to someone attacking me(I did just call someone a pirate). If you want to discuss the ideas please do so. Attacking me as a person is not going to make Urantia suddenly sensible.

I would say that the majority of Christians follow moderate doctrine and teachings, rather than the extremist rantings.
