Besides, if each generation is more radical than the last, and they sell out just as much, doesn't that mean that the resulting sell outs are still more liberal than the previous generation?

Then you get married. Guess what? While she might share the same beliefs, you're wife isn't likely to share the same passion you have for them. Naw, she is going to be far more pragmatic and "sensible" than you are, and she'll tolerate a bunch of talk, but she won't tolerate personally detrimental actions based upon your beliefs, as the following (entirely made up) argument will show:
Wouldn't it be another (conservative) reason to support gay marriage? After all, you need to get those homosexuals out of the fringes of the Left, too."Spirit merges with matter to sanctify the universe. Matter transcends to return to spirit. The interchangeability of matter and spirit means the starlit magic of the outermost life of our universe becomes the soul-light magic of the innermost life of our self." - Dennis Kucinich, candidate for the U. S. presidency
"That’s the future of the Democratic Party: providing Republicans with a number of cute (but not that bright) comfort women." - Adam Yoshida, Canada's gift to the world

The people who insist it does simply fried their brains on LSD."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

The phrase "selling out" is lame
Nobody sells out, people make decisions.
You have many roads to take, and just because someone else takes another road doesn't mean they've "sold out"
If you're willing to die for your cause, then you're already dead to your cause.
No cause is worth dying for...
I think it's worthwhile to sometimes consider the very real possibility that you yourself may be wrong (just as I myself am probably very wrong in just saying this to you)

Hey, who said I'm taking another path
People rarely betray beliefs, and beliefs rarely betray people.
Beliefs change and evolve, and you shouldn't remain in another stage of the development of your beliefs because you're afraid you'll "sell out"Civilization3

Selling out is of course very subjective. I would only use it to describe myself, as I can only understand the motives for my actions. Guessing at why other people do what they do is just that, guessing. To me, if I were to discard my ideals in favor of money, comfort, or a chance at a significant other, that would be selling out.

True JohnT's glimce at the future might be true for himself and many others but it's not right to make the assumption about everyone out there. The kind of life JohnT lives and have lived is not that common as it might be in the eyes of JohnT. He makes assumpitions about:
* The wife (existance and personality).
* Kids.
* Career.
* Constant strife for higher standard of living.
Sorry JohnT but that kind of life is actually pretty rare. A sizable minority perhaps. You're probably just jealous of a few of the kids here.

Who knows what the future will bring. I don't know what I will be doing 10 years from now. Who's to say, I don't move to France and work 30 hours weeks, and take 6 week vacations every year?"The purpose of studying economics is not to acquire a set of ready-made answers to economic questions, but to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists."

The 30 hour week won't make it another year. Not with 10% unemployment and companies saying they're going to be leaving France unless the Socialists make economically feasible laws.
Virtually every new entrapronuer in the last 10 years in France has already packed up and moved to Britian and/or the US because of the anti-business enviroment and this will continue to grow until the frogs make changes.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

ah the usual argument. when you get older you'll see blah blah
didnt bother to read it cause i have life here at me
plenty of people remain communist or socialist in europe after growing up and getting a job
and then they are attacked by people saying :how can you call yourself a communist when youre rich

Those who drop their little grandoise visions will finally grow up. Communism is not possible and usually there are some young people (certainly not even close to all) who are supporters of it. It is time for the Great Majority to stand up against this immature, lying and insolent group of people who called themselves communists.
I am for people who actually work for a living. I will be working for a living once I get out of school. I don't want the government to provide for me or steal my rights to private property as in communism.For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)
