Not only is there a higher risk of birth defects but the offspring have a greater risk of getting a double recessive gen that causes a genetic disorder such as sickle cell anemia, possible parkinsens or Altimers (though we really don't know for the last two).

Time magazine ran an article about Cousin's dating and marrying a few months back and you may beable to still read it on line. The conclusion was the risks are higher but birth defects occured only in 8% to 10% of cases (depending on which study you read) instead of the "normal 1% to 3%. So either way the chances are still pretty small and they don't matter unless a child is produced.

Still, unless you live in the deep south, this would be a big break from the social norms so I would recomend against it. After all there really are millions of other potential partners out there whom you are not related to.

Trust a typically humourless Finn to come out with that last post

                    One word: Hapsburgs.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

to be fair the hapsburgs are the result of generations of inbreeding

cousins probably will not be that bad

It isn't just Hapsburgs, Monk. In South Asia, they seem to do it all the time. I have an uncle and aunt, who are first cousins. Thankfully, all their kids came out all right.

it all has to do with how close

                          and to what extant

Royalty in europe did it to an extreme

                          like other areas

Inca Emperor's married their own sisters, but did not have the troubles of the Hapsburgs (of course they only lasted 99 years before the spanish came)

so it takes multiple occasions of incest before you get the Hapsburgs

two cousins having a child (as long as that child does not engage in incest) are not likely to have troubles

It hasn't been made explicit that they are first cousins. If they aren't first cousins, it's fair game.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

My grandparents on my mom's side are first cousins.

There isn't anything wrong with me, at least nothing serious.

                                Eh?

So you say DanS, that in America if they are not first cousins it is ok?

Or is this your personal opinion? Or are you joking?
