Well... if I remember correctly, one of Bush's early decisions as President was to link African aid to his idea of "ethics" - that is, withhold aid from any organisation that had a semblance of a relation to abortion. Perhaps these Congressmen are just trying to extend Dubya's policy of trying to exacerbate Africa's HIV problem by moralising?

considering that the government mostly funds the show in the US, they are involved in the US market

however, I agree with your point in regards to Africa

there is no reason for our lawmakers to legislate there

Jon: Exactly. This muppet will not be seen on the American version anytime soon. No reason for these reps to get all agitated about it.

Besides, the HIV infection rate over in Africa is much higher than what it is in America. Best if they can contain it over there.

        From the article:

In a letter sent on Friday to the president of the government-funded Public Broadcasting System, which airs "Sesame Street," the lawmakers noted the average age of U.S. viewers of "Sesame Street" in the U.S. is 2- to 4-years old.
Er, how many stations in Africa get PBS? For that matter, how many stations in America carry South African programming?

        Reason, Congress hardly knew ye.
oh god how did this get here I am not good with livejournal

but why do you need to have the bad things in life in the children's program
You should download the Denis Leary song "Life's gonna suck when you grow up".

It's reality, it teaches acceptance, it promotes tolerance. If you don't want all those things because you prefer your child to be blinded to the realities of the world, that's your choice and they don't need to watch the specific show. But don't let your politicians force your morals on everyone else.

            Boo for your type. Booo.

              See the resemblence?

Why not include child pornography and a paedophile vicar? Surely these issues affect children just as much.
there is no need to have a junky Muppet
              or an alcoholic muppet
or a muppet that is slowly dying of cancer
or a rapist muppet or a killing spree muppet or any of the things in life that are depressing

I prefer my child to come into things gradually

it is the same as not letting children see R rated movies

they are not ready for it yet

it is best for thir physchies to come into things slowly

I think AIDS in the US is better discussed at age 8 or 9 then at age 2-4

I want to save my little girl from the horrors of the streets; I don't expect to sit her down in front of the real world, not just yet!

                    no

in the US those are not big issues in most childrens lives at age 2-4

therefore they should not be in a chlidrens program

It's not a big issue for me either.
I say we just ban the phrase HIV nationwide.

                      Are you with me Jon?

Better yet why don't we make all TV shows about Christian Family values so everybody is happy?!

                              no

it is apporiate for those who are older in the US now

I see no reason for those in the US age 2-4 to deal with HIV

you are being rediculous and attacking strawmen you have created
