I'd love to do a whole thread on that.

You see, We have a similar situation in Israel. Hevrat Hashmal, the state-owned electrical monopoly, (so far , so good) , is full of blood sucking leeches on the throat of society , and both the public and private sector . These morons recieve the biggest benefits, and paychecks, and constantly keep losing money and raising prices to the consumer. Our Trade unions are mostly all incorporated into one big union, therefor , we can't do jack about them , and the union leader's allegiances lie with them. Meanwhile, nurses and doctors , that studied for many years, recieve paychecks that are less then half of these guys.
What can we do ?

Che, I don´t think that it´s so easy as to elect people and train them. Some people are natural leaders, some are not (like me for instance...).

But on the other hand some people rise to the occasion. And it´s not like they will be all alone in charge of the factory. We don´t want a fascist technocracy after all

Do they do a good job? Do you get frequent power outages (or even infrequent ones)? Does your power have lots of spikes and dips? How many electrical engineers do you have in Israel versus doctors and nurses? How many energy resources does Israel have?

Well, the quick and short answer, Comrade Dalgetti, is that I'm not familiar enough with the demographics of your society to coment on this problem. It could be that you have a surplus of Soviet doctors and nurses, who drive the prices down for all medical workers. I seem to remember that there was a huge health care sector in the USSR, and they didn't get paid much either.

I would also guess that the electrical workers have a monopoly on power in Israel, which gives them great bargining power. All workers should have such power vis a vis the capitalists (I know, it's a state company).

I would also question how much of this is true, and how much is propaganda being spread by those who would profit off of (or believe in) privitization of the company. It may be that they do a perfectly reasonable job, but forces are laying the ground work for selling off the company. As with almost every other place where privitization has occured, it would be a disasters for workers and consumers, while the new company sucks profits at the state teets.

I don't believe that workers should have SO much bargaining power, and they certainly don't have the right to push the consumer around , while they don't pay the electric bill themselves. The Electric Company , together with the water company are essentially run by their trade-unions, and this is , in it's own way, dictatorship.

Well ,I kinda read that between the letters. Technocracy is government by technology. I find nothing wrong with that.
