I live in Canada, so this is my government.
Hey troll, Newsflash. There's more than just paying taxes to define "your government." You hold citizenship in both countries, they're both your government. If you don't pay taxes, it is still your government.

All you're doing with this thread is being a troll.

And even if you hold a Canadian passport, we all know that what you think of your fellow Canadians and what you think about the country so your opinion doesn't really matter.

If that's how you want to define it, sure.
But since I didn't elect that government, I don't pay taxes towards that government, nor do I live in the area where that government has jurisdiction -- it's not my government.

It seems you have some fundamental problems differenciating between if it's my government or my country. There is a difference, you know.

And if you'd look at your comments, you'd see that you're the one that's being the troll, Tingkai.

Are you in tears posting this or something?

Like so many great Scots, he had to flee Scotland before he made it big.

After inventing the telephone, he spent the rest of his life trying to breed sheep with nine nipples. Don't ask me why.

This isn't about how I see it, this is the basics of citizenship 101. You are an American citizen. As such, the American government is your government. Your decision not to vote doesn't change anything. The fact that you don't pay taxes, doesn't change anything. The fact that you don't live in the States doesn't change anything. As long as you claim American citizenship, the American government is your government.

That's the way the US gov't sees it. You are liable for US income taxes, if you earn over a certain amount, regardless of where you live and regardless of whether you voted in the last election. As far as the folks in Washington see, they are your government.

This is simple stuff that you should have learned in high school.

How is it you can have both passports? I know the US allows dual citizenship, but AFAIK Canada doesn't.

The Welsh Assembly spent an hour discussing Charlotte Church's rear end. I'm not quite sure which is more pointless. Though I do know which I'd rather look at.

Kitty, you were just as eager to be a part of the net flow. If UC and Stanford hadn't been smoking crack, you'd be a statistic in my argument...

FYI, we got some great grad students from Canada into our program at NU.

You can only obtain dual citizenship if you've got an American parent and a Canadian parent.

Tingkai, you've got some really strange ideas.

I am a citizen of both countries, but "my government" is the one I elect, I pay taxes to, and the one I live under. While the American government may technically also be my government, it has absolutely nothing to do with my life or my money, so I don't consider it my government unless it does.

I only have one government at a time, Tingkai, but I have two citizenships. Citizenships just let me choose which government I want, not give me both.

That's the way the US gov't sees it. You are liable for US income taxes, if you earn over a certain amount, regardless of where you live and regardless of whether you voted in the last election. As far as the folks in Washington see, they are your government.
It's quite clear to me you don't understand how US/Canadian dual citizenship works if you actually think I pay US taxes of any kind while in Canada.

I am for all intents and purposes a Canadian citizen and a Canadian resident right now, and my government is the Canadian government. If I lived in the US, it'd be the other way around. It's not both. Very simple concept, something you should be able to figure out even without high school.

Yeah, it's really obvious here in Alberta as well about all the people leaving south of the border. It seems a lot of people come to Alberta from other provinces, then eventually end up going farther south from here once they see the difference in salaries, not to mention the lower taxes.

In 3 years I will be joining the people flowing south as well. But if you listen to the Federal Government/socialists, the Brain Drain is a myth. But it exists in several areas: From Saskatchewan (even BC?) to Alberta, and from Canada as a whole south of the border.
