If I were registered for Spanish elections I would almost always vote for the Partido Popular... a conservative party...

PP: Partido Popular - Página web del Partido Popular.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

I'm not far-left. I'm pro-capitalism, I just believe it needs to be limited. Monopolies are not capitalist.

Well let's see here. First, I do not dismiss that as a view from someone on the far left. And second, I am not a Republican (loony or otherwise). Oh well you only missed two out of two.

You're gay. That makes you far-left as far as bigoted Republicans go.

Umm actually it depends... if monopolies are state owned they certainly are not capitalistic. But if they are private they certainly are capitalistic. But they are not efficient. The same goes with oligopolies for those econ nuts who know what I am talking about.

Fair enough Lincoln. I do apologise for calling you a Republican. It's a pretty big insult, and I apologise for any offence called.

But surely capitalism is about market competition. With monopolies the competition obviously isn't there, so it may as well be state-owned.

Technically. That is why private monopolies are so inefficient unless not subsidized by the state. And Microsoft isn't a monopoly, if it was there wouldn't be any lawsuits. The OS market is an uncollusive oligopoly.

The water and electric companies are monopolies. If they weren't and weren't subsidized by the state, horrendous prices would be charged.

I know. That's the point I was making, that the US liberals were more right-wing than some European conservatives.

Excuse me but when you say "Well it has to be remembered that the American Democrats would be the equivalent of a right-wing party in Europe.", even if you were being sarcastic, in where would you position the Republicans? Far right?

We can't possibly consider your sentence as logically true!

The perceptions that US liberals are right-wing is brought about because they can't really practice what they want. Centrist public opinion doesn't allow them (same for Conservatives). They are not right wing.
