Glad to see this concept will likely catch on.

I knew Alvar Aalto, Martti Ahtisaari, Mika Häkkinen, Jari Litmanen, Gustaf Mannerheim, Paavo Nurmi, Jean Sibelius, Linus Torvalds and Mika Waltari.

Lots of skiers could no doubt have been included and I think Urho Kekkonen would've been a familiar person to a decent amount of foreigners as well. Not to mention the pioneer in modern sanitation, W.C. Hygieinen...

Is it my imagination, or did a fair number of Finns vote on this poll? All the choices seem to have a fair amount of votes. Only Finns could know that much about other Finns.

Nooo! Everybody knows everything about Finland.
"Spirit merges with matter to sanctify the universe. Matter transcends to return to spirit. The interchangeability of matter and spirit means the starlit magic of the outermost life of our universe becomes the soul-light magic of the innermost life of our self." - Dennis Kucinich, candidate for the U. S. presidency

Maybe 'cause there's about one million finns here that constantly starts threads about some obscure finnish happening or personality. Even if one is not the least bit interested one more or less have to read the titles of the threads to find something interesting about something else in the midst of 'em.

I think many can also identify Ville Valo.. as the lead singer in HIM. But i think he can not be considered as person because he's in a band..

I considered putting Valo on the list as the representant of Finnish pop musicians but then, for some reason, decided for Andy McCoy instead. It seems he's actually rather unknown to foreigners.

So, the Finns that are best known abroad seem to be Häkkinen and Torvalds...

I know all of these except McCoy, Thorne and Waltari.

I also know a lot of Karjalainen jokes. Where's he?

Oh, and the greatest poet ever to grace the Swedish language, Edith Södergran. She should be on there.

I know like a hand full of them, certainly less than of the Danes, not by far though.

I know Ahtisaari (politician, basically ended the Yugoslavia vs NATO thing), Häkkinen (F1), Litmanen (footy), Thorvalds (software stuff).
