    Another word from Star Drek:

The leader of the Ferenghi is the 'Grand Negus'.

Negus is the title of the Emperor of Ethiopia. It's literal meaning is 'Lion', but as a title it means emperor. The full title of an Ethiopian emperor is 'Lion of Judah'.
Hey! I mentioned that in a thread ages ago!

Ahh, but the question is whether in common usage it was used only in reference to persons specifically of european nationality, or would it have also been used in reference to Americans and other non-european westerners as well?

There was a lovely play by Molliere in which he heaps heavy non-PC ridicule on all the various dialects of baroque era France. Apparently at that time in French history there were a number of dialects throughout France that were so different from royal Frenach as to be nearly seperate languages. This applied not only to such distant provinces as Provence and Lorraine, but even Picardie and Orleans.

Klingons - Russians. Warlike against Humans during the first series (60s), friendly with Humans during TNG (90s)

Vulcans - Japanese. Once warlike people (World War Two) who have taken a calmer path.

Romulans - Chinese. Similar to the Vulcans, at odds with the Federation (and later the Klingons)

Ferengi - Europeans (exactly what I thought BEFORE finding this out. That only furthers my belief.)
I thought that the Klingons were supposed to represent the Japanese. Their warrior code is similar to the code of Bushido, and in TOS they even looked like Japanese with escessively busshy eyebrows. Even their uniforms had a vaguely Samurai look to them. Remember that Rodenberry served during one of the most hard fought battles in the Pacific. He would have been more familiar with the warrior cult type Japanese.

Come to think of it, the Romulans, the Klingons and the Vulcans all had vaguely oriental appearence.

No, when first creating the Klingons in pre-TOS days, Gene modeled them after the Soviet Russians. He has also confirmed that in many interviews. Only later, the Klingons got their honor-culture.

Just recently, they asked the actors who portray the captains (all 5, Shatner, Stewart, Brooks, the woman, and Bakula) about the lack of gay characters, and they all said that it's an "oversite" that should be looked into.

I also remember a year 7 TNG episode that dealt with sexual bigotry, through symbology (Riker falls for an andronimus alien, who takes on female traits, which is taboo in her society), so the issue has been addressed somewhat.

In one of the DS9 episodes the Trill "Dax" encounters a woman whom she had loved in a previous lifetime as a man. They try to keep the relationship platonic, but they can't. That was pretty close to being a gay relationship.

Maybe Federation medical technology found a cure for homosexuality?

Just my two cents on the topic (without completely reading it):

My guess would be that the word "Ferengi" is somehow enthymologically a confuse version of "Franks". I darkly remember to have heard about similar words in Turk and Chinese meaning "European" in general.

BTW, in one episode the Ferengi are compared to the Dutch merchants of the 16th/17th century.

                        That wasn't the only incident.

once with a female trill and crusher
once with jadzia and a former lover
once with ezri and kira in the mirror universe
(and the "subtle" hint about the debriefing, also in the mirror universe (ezri & leeta))

In other words lesbians getting it together are more of a turn on to Trekkies than gay blokes getting it on.

                            1) French accents are not very accentuated. They do exist, but the french has became a relatively uniform langage since a century.

                            2) ALL french dubbings suck BIG TIME. I always DL the warez version of a game before buying it, just to get it in OV and not having to bear the french translations and dubbing.

As an Indian , I am compelled to say that the word is
                              a)Firangi , or Firengi , not ferengi.
b)It means foriegner , not european specifically

No! Cause it's chinese for European.

??? In Mandarin, the word for "European" is "ouzhouren" (sounds something like "o-jo-ren"). Maybe there is another, older term?
