If the word was corrupted to apply to the Portugese specifically in Malaysia, might it also have been corrupted to refer specifically to the English in some usages in India?
    probably

This makes Saint Marcus' complaint invalid though, unless he wants to complain about Yanks making fun of "foreigners" or "Portugese".
No! Cause it's chinese for European.

I thought the Ferengi were based on 19th century American/Yankee something or other traders. I recall Data saying something about it in an early episode of STTNG.

I thought that it was Picard who said that. He was the one who usually did most of the smug Ameica bashing.

I'm sure it was Data, he was asked what he knew about the Ferengi and started a spiel that Riker gave a dodgy smile too.

And d'ya think this might be a coincidence...or do you think someone at Star Trek is actually smart enough to speak Hindu?
I recall Data naming his 'daughter' or something like that "Lal", which is the Hindu word for "peace", or "love" or something cuddly like that. Remember Pravin Lal, SMACcers?

You mean you didn't know Marky-mark?

                  Any English dictionary has Feringi.

Feringi: In India, a European; also a Eurrasian of Portuguese-Indian blood.
                  From webster's colligate dictionary.

BTW, it was Riker who called the Ferengi "Yankee traders" in the first episode they appeared, "The Last Outpost" from year one of TNG.

Evidently the folks in Bombay who make Indian cinema know very little about the Hindi language or history. That may be true since the film in question at points implicates the English as the main cause of the caste system and of he animosity between Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims. By the end of the film the local Muslims and Sikhs were happily joining their Hindu brothers in a little celebration offering thanks on their knees to Krishna.

Hmm, other things wrong with Star Trek-

                        - The entirity of Earth is equal as one plant, so WHY are most of the people on ships WHITE AMERICANS? Wouldn't logic state that most are Asian?

                        - Even though everyone on Earth is equal, there is nowhere near a 50:50 ration of men and women on any ship.

                        - Homosexuals appear to have been eradicated.

                        - Why does the universal translater make everyone's voice American? And why does it give the French Picard a British accents (unless it automatically detects if you are evil and gives you a British accent accordingly )

                        - Sometimes the Universal Translator works when it's not there. Clever that.

Any more? Or can someone refute my accusations?

                          Fereghi is foreigner or outsider.

Pathans in Afghanistan, for example, consider anyone not from their tribal group to be ferenghi, not just europeans.

                          Another word from Star Drek:

The leader of the Ferenghi is the 'Grand Negus'.

Negus is the title of the Emperor of Ethiopia. It's literal meaning is 'Lion', but as a title it means emperor. The full title of an Ethiopian emperor is 'Lion of Judah'.

"...Mangy dog staggering about, looking vainly for a place to die."
"sauna stories? There are no 'sauna stories'.. I mean.. sauna is sauna. You do by the laws of sauna." -P.

Since when did India have a monopoly on words or any nationality for that matter?

Next thing you know, people will be complaining because I'm naming my daughter Puta.

But they have spoken to primitive cultures who obviously wouldn't have the tech and they understood them...
