  • Childhood misconseptions

When I was little, I had a lot of misconseptions about the world around me.

I was convinced Chicago was California. I thought those little pasta shells were real shells that had been taken to a factory and processed so you could eat them. And no matter when, no matter what it was, it always happened "the other day". Last Thursday's dentist appointment? We went the other day. Pleasent trip to the zoo yesterday? We went the other day. The fall of the Soviet union? The other day.

As recently as 7th grade, I didn't recognize the word "rendevous". I knew the spoken word, but I had no idea what it looked like written out. So when I encountered a poster with "rendevous" on it, I of course tried to pronounce it "ren-div-onis".

Oh, and let's not forget the time I stuck the car keys into a power outlet to try and "drive" the house. Good thing they stopped me.

    What about you guys?
You're a man- you can be replaced.

      Easter Bunny
      Tooth Fairy
Didn't recognize the written word "chaos," so I pronounced it chay-oz
Didn't recognize the written word "society," so I pronounced it sosh-ity
Mangled the pronunciations of about fifty additional words

Onyx is not onix, rather it should be ankhs.

Naaah, rural (well, more suburban) Midwest.

I just never heard anyone say those words and when I read them that's what sounded right. Onix? How does that sound cool?

I didn't really get the concept and point of borrowing money. I thought you actually borrowed the bill, kept it for a while and then returned the very same bill back.

I thought an answering machine was a real person who answered all your calls.

It's pronounced with more of an ix sound, not ex like annex.

                  Yep! Thanks! No more teenager!

I thought the entire world had only 4 nuclear reactors. Then the truth was revealed to me - there were 4 in Finland, hundreds all over the world.

I thought you could just go to the bank and get money for whatever you wanted. No sense that you had to put it in the bank on the first place.

Thought economy cars were cars, and large cars were named automobiles. My dad remembers me asking him why we didn't get an automobile like my aunts. My dad drove a vw beetle, my aunt drove a mercedes benz.

I had little trouble remembering which one was US and which one was USSR.

I thought that school would last for three years, with first year being lower elementary school, second year high school and thrid year upper elementary school. (They have different names in Finnish.)

I didnt recognize "Bussiness"... But English is not my first language so it's forgivable.

When I was 3 or 4 I asked my father if the people in the movies die when someone shoots them. I was reffering to the artists, while my father thought i'm talking about the characters in the movie. So he said that yes, and until the age of 8-9 I couldnt understand how stupid the artists were. Getting killed only to be in a movie.

                            I'm reminded of a joke.

Dad and son are driving to visit granma. Daddy has to check his maps at crossroads, so he tells son "Son, you keep an eye on the road and tell me if there are any cars coming." Son does that. Daddy gets his maps in order, asks son "Are there any cars coming?" and the son answers "No." Daddy starts driving, when the car's hit by Lada. Son and dad are whisked to hospital, where they are treated, and after that, dad asks son:"I told you to tell me if there were any cars coming. You didn't do so. Why?"
                            "Lada isn't a car."
