This camp thing is simply a kids' play... They make us run around for a while and then sit and listen to lectures. We also get some 11 bullets and an old M16 in a shooting range

Huh.. sounds like an American High School .

Perhaps that's an impression you get because you usually see them "in action", with bombs going off left and right and real bullets flying around their ears?

Under such conditions, stuff like dress codes isn't exactly first on the list of priorities...

you'd be surprised how often soldiers do the opposite
Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..

Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

                          isn't it a cool feature?

it should have message icons and titles.

and the buttons should be removed

                            Weep for the dead Siro.

                            Hey!

It's not army yet - just a boyscout like training session to reduce the shock when I finally get drafted.

Anyhoo, I plan to ask for delay to get a first degree in Computer Science, and then serve in some technological unit or perhaps intelligence.

Just remember Siro - being an offcier is a HUGE chick magnet

Not here, where everyone's an officer.

Here the following things are magnets:

                            1. Pilots
                            2. Special Operations (Egoz, Duvdevan, Shayetet 17, Sayeret Matcal etc). (all names of special commando groups)
                            3. Navy Seals (though some were infected by cancer due to training in polluted water in the 80s).
                            4. People who can't tell you what they did (intelligence or spies)

Easy to say as an American. I don't know about you, but if I were an Israeli kid still in high school I'd be terrified of having to fight out in those camps. I'm not intending to bash on you, Dino, but it's just not a situation I think you've been in, and you shouldn't be passing judgement on somebody who is in it.

Well, going to the army is kinda scary.

But this experience will be fun I think.

The presence or absence of a threat doesn't give any government license to institute slavery, which is what conscription is.

So basically you want the government to offer you safety, but you're not willing to give your hand to the fight?

                            Very moral

Natural rights, by definition, exist no matter what.

Natural rights are an idiocy invented by people who are too used to their good livin'.

His primary responsibility us to protect his own life, not the lives of others. You call it cowardly, I call it a good, rational decision based on notions of logic and self-preservation.

Self preservation of my society is higher in importance than my own.

You know, a russian scientist did a reasearch once about the reason why Neanderthals got extinct.

One of his findings was that Neanderthals had no people who were ready to sacrifice one-self for the good of society.
Each person thought of himself alone, and thus the whole species disintigrated.

Obviously I will usually think of my self first, but I will not, ever, leave my familiy / friends / country men to die and run off.

Natural rights? Pfff. They are the artificial arguments of pampered people who have never had to face tough choices. The only rights any man or woman truely owns are the ones they are prepared to defend in the face of those who would deny them.

Natan, the fundamentalist parties have consistently shown hawkish tendencies and were pretty much always against peace and negotiation. Which is one of the many reasons why they are so much disliked by the secular guys - they are always for fighting, but they never fight.

I thought so too, but I noticed recently that Shas and Mafdal are one of the most responsible parties around.

Shas leader Eli Yishai always judges the situation objectively and rationally. Even if his supporters don't serve.
