Cats, like most intelligent animals, tend to reflect the environment and characteristics of the people they're around.

Most of our cats could probably be arsed to eat a bird if it flew down their throat while the cat was yawning, but then again, maybe not. Five of them did get curious about a baby sparrow that dropped in on them and hid in the bushes, but it took us several minutes to figure out they were a little too curious, and to recognize the little brown lump hopping around under the shrub. I went out there and grabbed the baby bird, and the cats didn't care and went back to what they were doing.

Five minutes or more, five cats, one baby bird with no place to go - and it didn't have a feather out of place. They were just curious about what was making the shrub move around.

There are some vicious ***** dogs and cats out there, but they usually reflact their owners, and the attitudes you express to them subliminally.

Cats kill because they're natural predators, just like dogs. They're also social animals, just like dogs, so if they're encouraged to be sociable, are well fed and taken care of, they really can't get arsed to go look for something to kill. Ignored and left to their own devices, they revert to their feral instincts.

Cats don't kill for fun, any more than dogs or people do. Far less than people, actually.

Anyway, the cat is down to less than four pounds, and "doing well" is a very relative term. I'm really not optimistic about her survival, even if the vet is for the moment. More optimistic than yesterday, but eating an ounce and a half or so of food with lots of coaxing is not a major triumph in my book.

Maybe you should put it down - no point in letting an animal suffer.

We currently "have" 2 cats. One is black and white. It comes to our backdoor sometimes like it owns the place and also trips the security light on our driveway a lot because it seems to be on one of its regular nightly "paths" around the neighbourhood. The other is a young tabby which is very tame and hunts in our garden at night. We always know when its around because it has quite a loud bell. I have to be careful not to lock cats in our garage because they seem to like to poke around in there at night.

I think the B&W one "owns" our yard so when it meets the tabby there is going to be trouble.

She got cancer, and couldn't be saved despite intensive treatment, and I was catless for all of ten days, when Patches showed up insistently at my back patio, like she'd been locked out. I opened the door, and she immediately walked in like she owned the place - turned out she'd been dumped by neighbors a couple of doors down who'd moved out of the same exact floor plan of condo, but it was kind of eerie the way she looked at me the same way as the cat I'd just lost, and the way she just knew the place.

Those two cats between them outlasted my first marriage, a few girlfriends, several jobs, moving, "friends" real and so-called. I've always found animals to be far more honestly giving and loyal than 99.9% of the human race, so losing a good one is tough - especially when it's slow and lingering like this, and I can't spend enough of her last time alive with her, because I've got people who's jobs and livelihood are dependent on me not taking time off from work right now.

The time does fly away - my son Ian's walking and running all over, talking away.

My cat tried a few times when she was younger to attack some birds. We scared her and hit her when she tried stalking them, and that behaviour soon stopped.

But we kind of went too far.

One day we saw her in the backyard, stalking a bird who was eating a piece of bread. As she got closer the bird noticed her and flew away. Undaunted, our cat kept stalking where the bird used to be, and at the last moment pounced on the bread! and eating it.

We had her put down last year as she was 17 years old, and really really sick.

Only when the lowlife scumbag cat haters do.

Skanky - tha'ts about like my previous long-term cat, (the one I had for almost 13 years off and on), who actually missed a dead bird.

Apparently, little miss fierce hunter didn't notice that the bird was just lying there with it's feet pointed out, and got in cat-launch position about six feet away, wiggled her butt to get set, and pounced - apparently, she was trying to pounce to where she thought the bird was going to be, because she overshot by about two feet off the ground, but got fixated on the bird and kept rotating her head to keep an eye on it - she landed in a tumble on her back, and never again tried to pounce on or stalk anything. Hilariously inept.

That would be an oxymoron, but considering it's you, I guess we'll call it a Horsiemoron.
