This is just as ridiculous as the Christianity thread. I said Ukrainian genocide, although really I think that's tied with the Cultural Revolution.

Duh! That was the point. It was supposed to show someone how stupid the Christianity thread was.

I'm gonna have to go with the Ukrainian Genocide, though it wasn't specifically targetted at Ukrainians, and it wasn't a genocide. Still, it was the first deliberate mass murder carried out in our movement's name, and the biggest stain we have.

The Red Terror was nothing compared to the White Terror.

The Great Leap Forward was not a crime, but a well-intended disaster.

I have no idea what the Cultural Revolution was. Collective madness?

I'm surprised you didn't put down The Khmer Rouge, even though they weren't Marxists, but some combination of Mao and Robspierre.

Allright, allright. Look, you may not believe this, but the other thread wasn't intended as a bash Chrisitianity thread. I was just curious cuz I got to thinking about all the knowledge that had been destroyed by that religion, and then I though if I was going to ask people what they thought about that, it would be insulting to leave out the actual people who were hurt.

I thought about including Year Zero along with a few other incidents but I didn't want the poll to get as cluttered as the Christianity's Greatest Crime was.

But it's still offensive. I think everyone would see that if it were "worst crime of Islam" or "worst crime of Judaism." A "worst crime of religion" thread, with or without a poll, would have been fine, but singling out the Christians isn't nice. Be a mentch, not a shegitz! :doitnow:

The most important knowledge of the Roman world was Roman engineering, which like the great ancient literature, was lost to the world during the dark ages. The engineering knowledge wasn't lost due to book burning though, but due to the general breakdown in the political order and the virtually total abandonment of commerce. Urban life also nearly vanished. By 600 AD the city of Rome, once said to have nearly one million inhabitants, had a population less than 10,000. With no one to pay engineers, builders and teachers, and no surplus urban population to serve as a labor force technological knowledge vanished.

Let me point out again that despite reports of the demise of the Great Library of Alexandria some of its contents seem to have been mysteriously been lent out in during the golden age of Islam. Where do you think the great libraries of Persia and Moorish Spain got their stock of books?
