    It's kinda common sense.
Having half of the country generally inaccessable makes it as good as useless. For the good of the country, it was connected via railroads with federal funding.

You're nitpicking now, and when it comes down to it, your comparison is still way, way off. The NEP was all about stripping energy revenue from the west and giving it to everyone, while at the same time allowing others to keep their resource revenue. That's not right, and it's certainly nothing like the concept of the CPR.

People die on both sides for different reasons. The only thing is in the US you're more likely to get better treatment.

Pull your head out of your ass, people die in Canada due to waits, people die in the US due to lack of coverage. Neither system is perfect, but the US offers better treatment right now.

What proof do you have to back up that statement?

Again, this is sorta general observation/common sense type thing:

          1) Most drugs are available in the US first, Canada gets them years later. Better drug availability.
          2) Most good research hospitals are American, so more cutting edge treatment is there.
          3) There is competition amongst providers, so they try to keep all equipment up to date and ready for use.

I've also had first hand experience in both countries with medical systems.

Get this bud. The main beneficiaries of the rails were the colonizers of Eastern Canada. They are the ones who got the profits from colonizing the West.

The Government of Canada was under a contractual obligation with BC to build it.

The people of Saskatchewan and Alberta have paid for those rails many, many times over. How long do we still need to be treated as colonies?

The CWB. You're on crack! The CWB was brought in in response to a catastrophic drought and a cataclysmic depression. How much longer do you want to enslave prairie farmers on the thoery that the two might coincide again? Yes, enslaved! They grow it, they have no choice as to where to sell it. Just exactly how many other Canadians live under such strictures? Hmmmm.

And let me tell you son, as a descendant of those prairie grain farmers. Not many of them liked it from the f*cking start! It was imposed to keep the economic exploitation of Western Canada by central Canada going. We would have done just fine without it Jack.

I don't believe you. You're just a spoiled rich kid who thinks 'cause he's born into a wealthy family he has the right to go to the head of the line. It's one thing to have pride in your personal success in life. It's quite another to look down on other people because of something your daddy did.

                Oh, yay for generalizations!
I'm not spoiled. My dad was poor and he doesn't hand me things, he expects me to earn them just like everyone else. It builds character. I have a job, I buy my own stuff, I'd have to pay my way through university if I didn't get scholarships.

                Don't patronize me, buddy.

I do believe if you've got the money, it's simply stupid to prevent you from spending that money to get services. There should be adequate services for everyone, but to be blunt, if you've got the money, and are forbidden to spend it on your own health, it's simply stupid. That's just how I see it, anyway.

Now come on, attack my character some more! I really enjoy that, especially since you don't know who you're talking to.

                  1) Wouldn't that have to do with getting regulatory approval for a drug? Also, the top drug companies are based in the US, so naturally the drugs come out there first. The link between this and the health care system seems tenuous.
                  2) But is this related to the health care system or to the fact that the US is the economic superpower, has more money to spend on research, and simply has more people so more medical reserachers.
                  3) true for the few elite hospitals, but for the majority that do not have the resources to compete, they may well be less likely to update equipment because of cost. The drive to keep down costs may result in lower quality care.

But this is all theory. Any studies showing that US health care is significantly better than Canadian health care.

I know there are studies that have shown the US system is extremely inefficient in terms of administration costs compared to Canada. that's recognized in the states, but American politicians are willing to pay the higher cost in order to keep their higher freedom of choice (a choice that is really only available to the rich).

                  • Why can't the boosters of Canadian health care admit it aint perfect. It has holes. It could be better. Is that sacriledge?

The guy's grandmother died due to delays. You think he's lying!

Come on, Canadians have more common sence than that don't they?

Do you all really think that Alberta is evil. That the ideas being incubated in Alberta about better health care FOR EVERYONE are so bad?

                    • Tingkai: You can't just make a study saying one health care system is better than another. It's subjective.

But all of the observations I've made are true, even if you dismiss them due to other factors such as the US' economic situation.

Well since you're descended from grain farmers and you claim that the damn easterners colonized the west then I guess you're descended from one of those damn eastern colonizers.

No one is disputing that Ottawa built the rail as part of the agreement to get BC into Confederation.

I said the CWB was created to protect farmers when things were bad, and then you claim I'm completely wrong and then say it was created when things were bad.

If the farmers are doing so well, how come they've been demanding, and getting, handouts for the past 20 years. The CWB protects them in bad years, and in good years the farmers are screaming to get rid of it.

The fact is: NO ONE FORCES YOU TO BE A GRAIN FARMER. If you don't like growing grain then do something else. We don't owe you a living.

                        • Poor people are poor for a reason. I don't buy the excuse that the rich people are keeping them down, I've seen that it's not true first hand. So don't give me that.
                          I rest my case. Goodnight.

I'm not saying you're wrong. I honestly don't know which system provides better care, on average or in terms of the best overall. I just wanted to know if you had specific facts to back up your claims rather than just analogies.

You can measure the adminstrative costs objectively and in this area the Canadian system is better, although that doesn't say anything about the quality of care.

You can disagree, but to do that you should actually post with content rather than a troll.

There have been two tales in this thread about poor people becoming better off. Some people can't make that leap, and there are definitely reasons for that. The same reason not everyone's an olympian.

I understand how warm and fuzzy it can make you feel to think all humans are created equal, but the harsh reality is it's not true. That's why some people have billions of dollars and most people don't.

                              It's survival of the fittest.
