My point was that the distinction between "cult" and "religion" is awfully hazy. Indeed, I get the impression that most people define "cult" as "every belief other than my religion."

That's where you're wrong --- you're making a huge generalization that has no foundation by saying that.

More and more people of any religion have come to respect other people's religions, since they all believe in the same God -- just in different ways.

I am a non-conformist Christian in that I do not belong to any denomination, yet I see all types of organized religion as legitimate, not merely as a kooky cult.

Down in this part of the South there are still alot of folks who consider Roman Catholicism a cult. I still occasionally see bumper stickers that say:

It don't matter what you consider it 'cause its real. Mind you this is Falwell/Robertson country. The worst is a guy named John Ankenberg. He's got a weekly show on CBN. I seem to recall his list of cults as follows: Roman Catholics, Mormans, Jehovah's Witnesses, Scientologists, Unitarians and the Unification church. If you listen to either of the other two guys long enough though you're bound to here him go off on a rant about the "catholic cult".

That's true of some cults, but not all. The military has no desire for all of your money, (unless you're a tax payer). It does wish to inculcate a specific belief system in you, however.
