Reminds me of when a kid asks "why is there a father's day, and a mother's day - but never a kid's a day?" the answer is, of course, that every day is 'kid's day'.

Unless otherwise said, any sporting event could be assumed to be the 'straight games'.

Besides, I doubt they exclude anyone from the gay games - which I think you seem to be implying.

All this nonsense with strawman arguments about Drunk College Olympics and Straight Olympics -- stay out if you can't contribute intelligent arguments.

I support Gay Pride as a civic, community event, and I support the legitimate reasons for gays and bisexuals to come out, but I cannot understand the reason for Gay Olympics.

Homosexuals and bisexuals should be welcomed into the mainstream Olympics, regardless if they are out to society or not. Then there is no reason for Gay Olympics.

        I agree with MrFun here.

Bollocks! The Olympics doesn't discriminate. Neither do student unions or any other university club.

Just because there is a majority of one kind doesn't make it not racism for a minority to create a club or group or anything with race sexuality, etc. in mind. It's the SAME THING and it's WRONG.

but they already are!! If a homosexual person is excluded from the olympics solely because he is a homosexual, it is wrong. It is simiarly JUST AS WRONG for a group to start a "Gay Games" and then say that heterosexuals can't join.

Just like, in my opinion, it's wrong to have a Student Union that anyone can enter, and then have a Black Studnet Union that whites can't join.

There should be NO such groups based on these things. Just groups. If you want to have a student union, it's just that - a student union. If you want to have an Olympic style games, that's all it should be - Olympic style games. No need to give it a name and constraints of only letting in one type of person. IT'S WRONG.

I'm having a similar debate with Starchild on ICQ about that right now.

I'm not really one for gay pride parades, and certainly not Gay Games as the Olympics are not discrimantory.

My hope is that eventually sexuality is a non-issue. And one of the routes to making sexuality an issue is by having parades, games, and other events that celebrates how you are different from the rest of society. As long as you keep telling people "Look at me, I'm DIFFERENT! I'm SPECIAL!" -- They'll treat you differently.

I already know they are welcomed on an equal basis, Orange, that is why there is no need for a separate Gay Olympics.

But I still support gay-oritented community and campus organizations.

                  That's some nice selective reading.

As I said in my previous post, I doubt the Gay Games excludes anyone. Just like when a chruch holds a community event they don't screen all of the attendants for varying beliefs - it's just a gathering for anyone who cares to come, only with a certain theme.

Of course, since white heterosexual males are the norm, if you where to create an event that was to celebrate being white, male, and straight - well, hell... you'd have to be a moron not to get the message that sends.

Yes, my response wasn't necessarily directed at you, despite using your quote...

But I still support gay-oritented community and campus organizations.
Why? What can a black student union do that a regular student union can't do? What can a homosexual student union do that a regular student union can't do?

                    NOTHING!

Black student unions would have more time and energy to specifically focus on the issues that concern black students.

And the same with gay organizations -- focusing on issues that concern gay and bisexual students.

Gay organizations should be open to inviting straights who support or sympathize with us.

Then what is the point of calling it the gay games? It implies that it's homosexuals only. Just like if you called it the heterosexual games, despite letting anyone in, it would still imply that it's for straights only.

Just like when a chruch holds a community event they don't screen all of the attendants for varying beliefs - it's just a gathering for anyone who cares to come, only with a certain theme.
They don't call it the "Catholic Social Event"

Even if it's sponsored by a Catholic church.

Of course, since white heterosexual males are the norm, if you where to create an event that was to celebrate being white, male, and straight - well, hell... you'd have to be a moron not to get the message that sends.
So in America it's wrong to have a white student union, but in China it would be ok? Or in South Africa? What about India?

                        Black pride = pride
                        White pride = racism
                        Homosexual pride = pride
                        Heterosexual pride = closemindedness

It's a double standard, and I fail to see how it could possibly be anything else.

Well, I have seen/heard of things like "Gay/Straight/Bisexual Alliance" organizations. What's the point of that? Why not just have a student union?

Gay/Straight/Bisexual Alliance organizations are around for sexually tolerant people. More specifically, they're usually used for support purposes for GLBT teenagers, with the occasional straight person who wants to help out.

Can you explain that a little more?

I have a friend involved in the one at Arcadia University, and he is straight...but I never really got to talking with him about what it is.

I don't see it as meaning that, for instance gay pride parades (as far as I know) let everyone participate, it's not about being gay per se, it's about celebrating - The same reason which is behind any other parade

Technically speaking, yes... but I don't know if i disagree with you on this student union thing - I'm talking about events and celebrations.

                                Black pride = pride

White and heterosexual pride is redundant in this society.
