The panhandle came with Alaska. It was part of Russia.

How much vote tampering are you talking about ?
I've heard/read about the claims, and i even seem to remember that there was proof to that effect but i have no numbers.
Care to share ?

As for popular support for separation: it's been lower but I don't think it's likely to happen in the near future either, if ever.
Throughout the 80's and most of the 90's new voters in Quebec would favor Separation but that trend is dying now i believe.

So, outside of a major blunder from the Feds - but with J.C. at the helm, who knows! - i don't see the numbers getting back towards what they were in 95.

What was all the diplomacy about trying to fix where the border was?

When the Brits, 'representing' us, sold us out, what big chunk of territory did you get in order to get easier Klondike access?

That was on the Princess Charlotte(?) islands, but there was also some dispute wrt what Russia actually had claim to. It had to with the extent of their colonies in the Northwest.

There was very much a dispute over the panhandle border.

The southern border also had a dispute, but that was settled more amiably. The episode where Kaiser Wilhelm, for whatever reason, was brought in to fix the border, he just drew a zig-zag which is why the kids who live in the wrong part of his 'zig' have such a long bus ride to high school...

There were claims that in 4 districts something like 20 000 "No" ballots were rejected without cause. A few electoral officers were fired. It didn't look like it was a conspiracy from the top down, just a few overzealous péquistes...
