  • The Most Dominating Aircraft Ever?

Which aircraft so dominated its contemporaries as to be the most dominating ever? The Sopwith Camel? Spitfire? Zero? Mustang? ME262? Saber? F4? F15?

Any others that were greats that aren't listed? Any that don't belong on the list?

Is 'Saber' correct? I don't recall. (Getting old)

Anyone remember the German WW1 plane that dominated for the early years of WW1?

What's the best of the jets on the drawing boards or just entering production? The US has the F22, speed, vectored thrust and stealth, but what of the Euro fighter and the new Russian Mig? Does SAAB still make fighters? The French have anything new?

      Does the Avro Arrow count?

I'll have to go with the F4F Wildcats. That aircraft was the begining of the end for the Japanese Zero.

The F-15... still, the best air superiority fighter still flying.
It was so good, the Russians built a plane "just" like it... one would think that it is a direct copy

                  It's the F-86 Sabre.

Do you mean the Fokker Eindecker?

I'd say the Zero because simply the best fighter in the Pacific for most of the war (until the arrival of the Corsair). The Zero was fast and maneuverable. The only way the Americans could compensate for their inferior fighters was to create team tactics.

Even late in the war, a zero flown by a good pilot could holds its own against the American a/c.

In the European theatre, none of the planes really dominated the enemy.

The Mustang was probably the best fighter, in terms of performance, but it didn't dominate the skies by itself.

Hell yeah! The Eurocoms are even copying that concept today.

Russia's aerodynamics is about 15 years ahead of the US. Just look at the MiG-25. It's stainless steel and can still fly so fast.

Asher, what is an Avro Arrow?

DinoDoc, did the F4F dominate all others though?

UR, is the SU35 the new Russian fighter with vectored thrust?

Ming, F15 has to be one of the top contenders, but I wonder if it dominated its contemporaries more than say, the Sopwith Camel?

Tuberski, is the F22 going to be all that much better than the Eurofighter?

My personal fav is the Convair B-36 Peacemaker. It was from the 1950s-1960s. At the time it was the largest bomber and capable of traveling the furthest. Plus I just like the name
