  • Bush: Still good for a laugh

"He's back. Six months after his transformation from national joke into indefatigable statesman, George W. Bush was on vintage form at a recent concert given in his honour. As Stevie Wonder took the stage, the President started waving to the blind musician, only to drop his hand when he realised his mistake. 'I know I shouldn't have, but I started laughing,' one witness said. "

"Here's a vignette we're dying to see on the ABC broadcast of Sunday's Ford's Theatre Presidential Gala: When Stevie Wonder sat down at the keyboard center stage, President Bush in the front row got very excited. He smiled and started waving at Wonder, who understandably did not respond. After a moment Bush realized his mistake and slowly dropped the errant hand back to his lap. "I know I shouldn't have," a witness told us yesterday, 'but I started laughing.'" --Lloyd Grove, Washington Post, 03.06.02.

I really, really need a "collective embarassment" smily.

Stevie Wonder was one of the greatest stars of Black music in the sixties and seventies. He was also one of the greatest musicians, writing, producing and performing classic upon countless classic.

I can almost be you'll have heard at least half a dozen of his songs on the radio or elsewhere. "You Are the Sunshine of My Life"? "Superstition"? "Livin' For the City"? "Happy Birthday" (No, not that one, the MLK one)? "My Cherie Amour"? "Sir Duke"? "Uptight (Everything's Alright)"? Rather embarassingly "I just Called to Say I Love You"? Don't tell me you've never heard any of these songs.
