  • Thanks to our allies - updated

at this stage of the war on terrorism it is worthwhile to step back and remember the assistance the US has received from its allies in the war in Afghanistan.

Britain - still the key ally. Participated in the air campaign. More importantly, their experienced special forces played a key role in the early phases, when the outcome was in doubt. They have taken the leadership of and provide the bulk of the force in the ISAF, the peacekeeping force in Kabul. Their diplomatic support has been important.

Canada -surprisingly, their troops came in not as peacekeepers, but as conventional forces alongside the US in Kandahar. (IIUC this was because of a Canadian desire not breakup a unit, which would have necessary to fit into ISAF) As some said earlier, this is a long war, and there is still opportunity to get in on the fighting, which Canada is doing.

Germany- Germany's role has been principly political and diplomatic, however in this war that has proved invaluable. In particular Germanys role in organizing the Bonn confernce, and pressing for a balanced multiethnic, multi faction govt in afganistan has given that country its best chance for peace in a long time.

Australia - Special forces played key role early.

I am not focusing here on the investigative/police war on al -qaeeda outside afghan, as that deserves a seperate thread

I believe he prefers the term "horse's ass."

Anyway, should we start a pool? I say... two hours from now.

Thank you Ming. However I believe I am still entitled to my opinion on the matter (?) and will respond to this little manifesto accordingly.

Britain - still the key ally. Participated in the air campaign.
Not anymore than my dog did. Count to ten and that's about how many bombs they let loose on the Taliban. Miserable, and more importantly, worthless when compared to the huge contribution of America in all aspects of this war.

Their experienced special forces played a key role in the early phases, when the outcome was in doubt. They have taken the leadership of and provide the bulk of the force in the ISAF, the peacekeeping force in Kabul. Their diplomatic support has been important.
Diplomatic support? You must surely mean the time when pretty little Mr. Blair so angered the many leaders of the Middle East that he was asked to leave the region immediatly in disgust? Aha. I'll give you this, though, that was one damn funny episode with Syria...

          *throws up*

Perhaps you could present me with a list of Canadian casualties in this war, since they were side by side with our troops and all. Or maybe even a nice round figure of the total number of missiles or bombs they fired off into Afghanistan? Yawwwn.

Germany- Germany's role has been principly political and diplomatic, however in this war that has proved invaluable. In particular Germanys role in organizing the Bonn confernce, and pressing for a balanced multiethnic, multi faction govt in afganistan has given that country its best chance for peace in a long time.
Germany did not organize any conference, the only role they played that would've been difficult for another coalition member to do itself would be the arresting of a couple suspected terrorists hiding in their country. Whoopie. Not only is that selfish, it's not related to the united war on terrorism in any way.

Australia - Special forces played key role early.
That's remarkable, because they didn't even join the war for about five months. And even then all we got were some planes and a boat, that IIRC were recently sent back anyway.

If you really live in America, LOTM...ack. I'm really, honestly in shock.

Wiglaf, having friends is important, it gives your enemy someone else to shoot at.

Oh lord, don't egg him on more. It's my fault he posted that tripe in the first place; let's not beg for a second serving.

As an American, I'm proud to have such close, loyal allies in a dangerous time. Of course, other Americans might disagree. That's the beauty of the country, though.

Generally ground troops do not "fire off bombs and missiles".

There are no Canadian deaths thus far. Yes, we're just that good.

One officer has been grazed by a bullet so far.

Wiglaf, don't you get tired of trolling as the village idiot?

But he is correct - the US bombed Afghanistan for more extensively than Britain did. However, a few basic home truths will reveal the reasons:

America - First-rate superpower. Huge military with immediate overseas deployment potential.

Britain - Second-rate at best. Small military with limited deployment capability.

So America can drop more bombs on people than Britain can. Are we really surprised? And why ***** about it anyway?
"Paul Hanson, you should give Gibraltar back to the Spanish" - Paiktis, dramatically over-estimating my influence in diplomatic circles.

I read somewhere that at least 28 nations have contributed special ops, but will not publicly acknowledge their role.
