      wow !

BTW, the idea to trial Shimon Peres is really ... uh ... wierd.
If we do for Shimon, then a lot of president, minister or general in many countries deserve it.

Seems that Belgium ministers haven't no internal works to do...

People here said that Sharon should be trialed for the deaths of those 5 Palestinian children.
Then why shouldnt Peres be trialed for the death of 100 innocents?

Also, France considers suing Israel for damages done to infrastructure that was built with EU money. Estimated of 13,000,000$.

In Belgium(like most modern nations) are the politic powers and the legal powers quite completely separated.

Based on Belgian law may the parlement not interfere with by any possible means with the legal power.

the fact that some induviduals use the Belgian court to try to sue Israel has nothing to do with the governement. Most people of the Belgian governement disagree with that trial but because of the separtaion between legal and political power can't they interfere at all.

Most of the governement are thinking of changing some Belgian laws to makes things like that no longer possible without the premission of the parlement(from who most where against the court against Sharon)

It is not the Belgian goverment or nation who is organizing this trial but some moslims who live in Belgium, that's a big difference. The Belgian governement can't stop this trial without removing the separtaion between legal and political power from the constitution doing that would take many years and would be a very big mistake and most likley the end of the Belgian democracy.

There's a reason I put a smiley on the post.

Seems to me that the Belgian legislature could just repeal the law they passed which gives Belgium jurisdiction over all people in all places. IMHO, they should before someone decides to mount a military operation to rescue those abducted by the Belgian courts.

Oh, and it's a total outrage and vile double standard that these guys come back from Lebanon and demand that Peres be tried while saying not a peep about Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah leader and international terrorist.

No one said anything about active enforcement outside belgian sovereign territory. That is a speciality of the US and Israel.

In global jurisdiction, their biggest problem may be the competition by US courts. As a compromise, criminal trials in Belgium, tort claims in the US ?

Seriously though, I assume there is no such law repealable. Universal jurisdiction in certain cases is part of international law, and as such takes precendence over domestic law. Might take a constitutional amendment to "repeal" this.

As long as Peres or Sharon don't set foot in Belgian territory, they're fine. If they do come on Belgian territory they might be forced to defend themselves against these claims in court.

But who wants to go to Belgium anyway?

Didn't the Israelis destroy part of the Gaza Strip sea port? i think that was funded by the EU.

Was the royal house of Belgium ever properly tried for it's atrocities in Africa? You know they were largely responsible for the wholesale land grab of Africa by the various European nations in the 1880s. It seems that when stories of how the Belgians were torturing Africans in order to persuade them to work on their plantations and mines the other nations of Europe rushed to protect the rest of Africa by scarfing up all of the "free" land. Perhaps it's time for President Bush to announce the beginning of "Operation Way Too Long Delayed Justice'".
