  • Creationism is pseudo-science. It makes no predictions, it assumes things without a basis to do so, and many of it's assumptions have been proven wrong.

For a good view on Darwinism from a non-strictly-biological point of view I recommend reading "Darwin's Dangerous Idea" by Daniel C. Dennett. Brilliant book.

Sure, the observation of gravational lenes was a direct evidence for GR, but a theory that explains existing observations better (such as SR vs Newtonian Mechanics) can be construed as evidence for that theory.
The perihelion motion of Mercury could just as easily have been explained by a planet. Indeed it was called Vulcan. The belief at the time was that as the planet Vulcan was so close to the sun it could not be seen without blinding yourself, and luminosity variations would yield no discernable proof. If it were not for GR then this belief would have persisted.

The theory of GR was an extension of the thought experiments performed by Einstein. At no point until the 1960s were experiments refined enough to demonstrate GR was "accurate" with its predictions. It was only accepted because the mathematics and the logic was "sound", and Newtonian mechanics had to be replaced due to the evidence of QM and SR. i.e Newton was wrong, but by no means was GR right.

If you want a modern example, take string theory. There is no direct evidence but it is widely accepted as a correct working theory.

      • Many scientists are backing away from the String theory now. Apparantly it wasn't as good as they hoped it would be, so they are busily working on a replacement.

        Same goes for the many-worlds-theory.

It more accurately had been "put on ice" for purely mathematical reasons. They had "equations" that they couldn't solve as they lacked the required mathematical "tools".

It is more alive now than 10 years ago.

          • Also, although creation cannot be proven wrong - it could be proven right. God could descend with His Host of Angles tomorrow morning, and then we would all know for sure.
That won't happen because I am almost never wrong when it comes to religion.

And when I make that statement I would see that most people at apolyton probably would side with me, but not when I make that statement about the war in Afghanistan or Dubya (Whom I appreciate).

Creationism was kicked out of 95% (5% located in redneck Kansas, etc) of the public schools in the US because it wasn't proven and had not one fact. That was in the early 1900s. William Jennings Bryan, a creationist nut, failed to prove his point because he had nothing. He also ran for president like four times and failed. Though he won the case in 1925 against a teacher who was teaching evolution, he died five days after the trial was finished, and the whole thing damaged the fundamentalist cause. In the following years, evolution was accepted as it has facts. Don't get me wrong folks, people who believe in creation are at least 70 years behind the times.

I'm agnostic, and I really think it's arrogant for people to make comments like that.

              • One nice tidbit: Creation science is still tought in some US schools, but in no European schools. In fact, In Holland evolution is a required subject you have to study if you want to pass your finals. Why is the US so backwards in this?

As I said some people would side with me, if not most... but a few won't. Asher, I don't think we shouldn't talk anymore, it could bring up disputes, discuss this over icq, I got a new password which I have written down. So it is secure.

                  Anyways, back on topic.

Evolution is taught in almost every public school in the US as it is required for Science Classes. But the only place you are talking about Mark, is the redneck ally throughout Kansas and so forth. Even there evolution is starting to push out creation in these areas, it is taking time though because of the stupidity of the previous generation. (Refering to Kansas and those few places where they still do teach creation.)

Anyways, almost all schools are teaching evolution.

Does it really matter how many people do or do not believe a certain theory. Even if the majority of people believed the Earth was flat and located on the back of a giant turtle would it make it right?

Are you saying evolution is stupid?

Creation is wrong. Geocentrism and a flat earth was proven wrong, they are elements of the bible.

Maybe I was too harsh in what I say about not being wrong. But creationism was dealt a massive blow on 1925 when it was revealed to be a farce. Evolution, in my perspective is supported by evidence.
