Dan, weren't you a pesticides analyst anyway?

Yep. Still am. This endeavor should take only a couple of hours an evening to run and will probably never amount to anything more than about 1/2 million dollar/year sales, if it ever even gets to that.

Personally, I am interested in being involved in the development and sale of a PCB. I have thoughts on a couple of petroleum industry automation/remote data collection projects that require a lower degree of sophistication than does this video project.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I must admit I don't have the slightest clue how large the market for this kind of applications could be.

What exactly are you doing in this project?

Please remind what a PCB was again. (in case you told me before)

And last but not least, I like SDI Silk. Were you inspired by that other SDI?

          PCB = Printed Circuit Board.

"And last but not least, I like SDI Silk. Were you inspired by that other SDI?"

Thanks! No, SDI is a term of art. SDI stands for Serial Digital Interface and is a way to transport video (and sometimes audio) from one video device to another. It is mainly used by broadcast TV and video producers, but we're using it for home theater.

"What exactly are you doing in this project?"

I conceived the product in its current configuration, am coding the software support in DScaler, and am selling the card. My partner did most of the hardware engineering.

"I must admit I don't have the slightest clue how large the market for this kind of applications could be."

The software to support this type of board (DScaler) is free and open source and gets about 7,500 downloads a week--the growth in distribution has been geometric and started about a year ago. A similar piece of software gets a ton more downloads, and is still growing geometrically (Virtualdub). The total number of boards that have been sold with this chipset is around 10 million at (let's say) $75/board.

If you figure that this board costs $400 apiece compared to a normal board at $75 apiece, we might be able to get orders on .1% or .2% of those software downloads (i.e., several standard deviations from the mean on a normal distribution curve). Of course, this is just back of the envelope stuff and doesn't even remotely resemble a well put together marketing plan (a pricing curve isn't a normal distribution, after all).

Anyway, all I care to know at this point is that we're seeing sufficient interest. The price isn't proving to be an undue hurdle.

            DanS,

Actually I'm glad you didn't pick Digital Silk, it sounds soooo 1998. (No offense to whoever thought it up). SDI Silk sounds pretty cuttting edge yet professional.

If you wanted to TOTALLY discredit your product, name it something like, "Green Dragon" or "Blue Gorilla" or something similar to any a number of Roland's .com stock holdings.

I thought that kingsizeporn.com was bought out by...

                ...teenobesenymphos.com?

Another question... Why has the Dollar proven so strong versus the Euro? Everybody's predicting a meltdown, but it hasn't done it yet. Explanations? Lag time?

I would have expected something different, considering that the gov't is printing money like it's going out of style...

Only about 75 percent of the nation's industrial capacity is now being used, the lowest level in 18 years, and profits are still falling.

=eventual closures, debt restructurings & bankruptcies, trouble at financial institutions due to bad loans and maturity mismatches, rising unemployment & average wages, falling real estate prices, mortgage foreclosures, even more problems at financial institutions...

After this is over, US will be a beautifully deleveraged economy, hopefully having learned a lesson in Macro 101 ...

                      Speaking of Leverage...

Today I modified my screen (which contains about 300 stocks right now; mkt cap > $1 b, P/B < 1.4) to account for debt/equity below .2. Nothing interesting shook out of the mix for me (beyond COMS, which I continue to buy on opportunities), but there were a ton of financial services and insurance companies. An enterprising investor who has knowledge of this area could make some good investments.

                        by .2. you mean 2 or 0.2?

Actually, there were 30 stocks in my screen (~10%) with debt/equity above 2.0. Only half as many as those in my screen with debt/equity less than 0.2. Such top-flight companies as Level 3 Communications made the > 2.0 grade.

Basically, my less than 0.2 screen was a test to see who had cash lying around and not much debt. There aren't that many!
