Get off that high horse. You know damn well that smoker paid many, many, many times his health care costs in taxes. I'm not talking about the taxes everyone pays either I'm just talking about the sin taxes which smokers and drinkers have to pay.

According to studies linked in this very thread, the sin taxes aren't nearly enough.

We haven't even touched on the intangibles, such as the problem of waiting lists for treatment in Canada -- resources are being sucked up by smokers getting cancer, and it's not just money.

They are morons because they fill their lungs full of smoke on purpose. That's all it takes to get put on the Moron List.....

to seeing smokers huddled around a tree out in the parking lot trying to get the fix.

Hmmm... here is what the study said...

The authors found that smokers’ costs to society are less than generally believed -- about $1.44 of the $40-per-pack total -- when costs to the smoker’s family are not included.

"The reason the number is low is that for private pensions, Social Security, and Medicare -- the biggest factors in calculating costs to society -- smoking actually saves money," Sloan said. "Smokers die at a younger age and don’t draw on the funds they’ve paid into those systems."

Using this figure, some economists might suggest that cigarette excise taxes in many states already are high enough to recover society’s portion of the cost of smoking.

                    • Yep, smokers die much earlier, meaning we don't have to pay as much for them as we do for those that live to old age.

You tried to play that trick already. Post the entire context:
But when the combined costs to society and to other family members are considered ($6.88 per pack), one might conclude instead that excise taxes are far too low, Sloan said.

Given the high costs and adverse effects of smoking on individuals, it is "remarkable," the authors conclude, that funds from the 1998 settlement involving 46 state attorneys’ general and major tobacco manufacturers largely are not being spent on smoking-cessation or related programs. Many states are using the funds to cover budget deficits or, as in North Carolina, on economic development in tobacco communities

                        Also:

                        • Medical costs attributable to smoking comprise
6 to 9% of the total national healthcare budget.8
                        • Every pack of cigarettes sold creates more than
$7 in medical care expenses and lost productivity.3
                        • For every smoker who quits, $1,623 is saved
                        annually in healthcare costs alone.9
                        • Smokers tend to have more hospital admissions,
take longer to recover from illness and injury,
have higher outpatient healthcare costs, and
                        have lower birthweight babies

The part I left out shows the states are getting the money, but it is THERE choice to spend it on something else... and are misusing the money. The point is that the states aren't spending the money they were given to attempt to set up programs to help people stop or not start in the first place.

                            • No, what this thread shows is the raw hatred of smokers by non-smokers. If the same hatred was shown towards their group, they complain. But it's ok to hate smokers because they choose to smoke. Pretty pathetic. It stopped being a choice many years ago. I've tried to quit many times. I would choose not to smoke, but it is a strong addiction and I have not been strong enough. Instead of showing sympathy, some choose hate. It's disgusting.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

Right... you're a hypocrit, pure and simple. You are all for discrimination unless it's against you... while that might seem right and fair to you... it isn't!

You can try to justify it all you want... but it's still discrimination.
You know, most companies only hire people if they have certain qualifications, and if they aren't capable of doing the job, they get fired!!!

Not all discrimination is created equal. Discrimination = making a choice.
