  • When Babe Ruth retired in 1935 with 714 home runs only two other players had hit 300 home runs. Who were they?

    • I know one's got to be Lou Gherig.

      For the second... Mel Ott?

Gehrig had 378. One down, but ya gotta have both.

            • At the end of the 1935 season, Jimmie Foxx had 302 HRs.

              • ...which of course means the Babe retired in the middle of the '35 season. Duh.

Sigh. Of course, I know it now. I looked it up, but it only confirmed what I had already figured was the answer. Why I didn't post it, I don't know.

                • 'Tis a bit of a trick question.

Funny that Foxx ended the season with more home runs than the "player yet to be guessed" had at the time of Ruth's retirement

I typed in History of bowl games, got the list of defunct bowl games right off.

                        ACK!

                        • Yeah I got that too, but it didn't have locations and I just didn't take the time to go through each one to find which one was played on foriegn soil. I guess "Bacardi" should have been a clue!

                            • Only other possibility I can think of, since Foxx was my backup choice, is Rogers Hornsby. Not sure if he ever got to 300 or not, though.

                              • Rogers Hornsby had exactly 300 home runs when the Babe retired.
