While Armstrong's payola scandal is doubtless a far less serious outrage than exposing the nation's terrified viewers to a glimpse of woman's teat (think of the indignation babies are subjected to daily!), at least it's reassuring that one of the nation's moral titans is on the case.

I read a blogger somewhere who undertook a campaign to email every prominent conservative journalist to directly ask them if they received funding from the White House. He was publishing a list of those who refused to reply. Would be nice to play that out in the national media, where real pressure to declare could be focused. Interesting to see if any other talking moles can be smoked out.

Relax, Berz. I was looking for a fight and you gave it to me. Have to grant that you are a game duck.

I do think you are looking a little hard for justifications for something I find unjustifiable though. In the mean time, it seems I have an opportunity to Canuck the thread, so thanks.

You might be surprised. First though, you have to understand that many people who were not living in the British Isles thought of themselves as British. Not English, or Irish, Welsh, or Scots directly, but still British.

The wik link I have is written a bit strangely (the guy is awkward in imitating a formal style) but the significance for Canada of the Revolution and the United Empire Loyalists (ie, Brits of the New World) is there to be seen.

In essence, three of the original five Canadian provinces were colonised largely by refugees from the Revolutionary War. There were that many of them (the refugees) and those who came here underwent some significant hardships to remain with the Crown. It's not mentioned in the link, but many others went South to the Caribbean.

The influence of the Loyalists in Canada runs strongly for 150 years or more. One King, One Flag, One Fleet, One Empire, from the early 20th century when Canadians opted to fund RN dreadnaughts rather than building our own, comes from the feeling of the people here that they were British first and from some colony second. It isn't until after the shock of the First war and then the trials of the Second that Canadians sought to cement our own unique nationality.

Incidently, anyone born in Canada as late as 1946 was born a British subject, so who were those large numbers of people who fought against the Revolution directly, or who left when the Revolution succeeded?

Yes. I know. Not the point.

From roughly a third of the population of the 13 colonies. I wouldn't say there were not many British citizens around.

We did a pretty good job of running off the Tories, yes. 80,000 loyalists fled from the colonies during and after the war. By comparison, only 10,000 royalists fled from France during the French Revolution.

10,000 wouldn't have jump-started Canada. Prior to that there was only the Montreal-Quebec corridor and some very small settlements in Nova Scotia.

It took a catastrophe and some seriously motivated individuals to settle some of the rest of this country where temperatures go to -30c for weeks on end and the mosquito was your constant friend when the temperature rose above 0.

Canada wasn't hospitable, by and large. That's why it took some motivation on the part of the colonists to settle it. For Ontario it was the Revolution. For the Prairies it was immense population pressure in Europe and the prospect of free land.

Why don;t you threadjackers create you own thread for the rather interesting discussion, HMMM? Then we can discuss the endless slimeminess of this administration in greater depth.

So DD, whats your take on this whole situation? How many people do you expect to resign over this one? Too bad Paige left already- but someone must be left at the Department of Education who helped in this fiasco.

Oh, and what do you think Williams should do?

I dunno. We do seem to have been quite effective at chasing loyalists out of the US. However, I don't know enough about the situation to comment more than that.
